Galileo Galilei, an Italian physicist, philosopher, astronomer, engineer and mathematician, played a large role in the development of science during the Renaissance era. Galileo was born to Giulia Ammannati and Vincenzio Galilei in Pisa, Italy on February 15th, 1564. He was the first of at least four children; several others are believed to have died at a young age. His mother Giulia was of nobility and hailed from the city of Pescia. Galileo’s father Vincenzio was musician from the city of Florence. Vincenzio was particularly interested in developing and experimenting with odd tempos and unusual sounds. According to Robin S. As a result, his father left for the city of Florence, where the Renaissance had begun, to continue his work as a musician. Around the same time his father left Pisa, Galileo began working with a tutor. He began to show appreciation for mathematics and other subjects such as Latin. When he turned ten years old, Galileo and his mother moved to Florence to be closer to Vincenzio. He soon began attending a monastery in the Florence area, where he studied logic, religion and Language (specifically Greek and Latin); essentially the main subjects educated people studied during Galileo’s era. He developed a strong bond with his religious learning, and considered becoming a full-fledged monk. However, his father, upon hearing Galileo’s thoughts, convinced him that he, being the oldest child, had to provide for his family; he pulled his son out of the monastery immediately.
