Gaming Discourse Community: Overwatch

The world of reality is a harsh one, a place where the unexpected can occur with no control of the outcomes and people are just supposes to let it happen. I know a different world where the outcomes are weighted in the favor of the player, the person or people in control. In the gaming discourse community, there are skills that I have learned that can be useful in day-to-day academic activities, and in classes. In the gaming community the skills adaptability, tenacity, and analyzing strengths and weakness will help me in the academic community by allowing me guidance in college.

Same for college, one person might have their way of success and another has theirs. A little under a year ago and still to this day, I play an online game called Overwatch it is the game that has helped me learn how to adapt to the unique gameplay of the other players I go up against. In Overwatch there are twenty-five characters that have their own controls; no one character is the same as another, I have adapted to the assorted styles that these characters can be played some more so than other. This helps me in school by helping adapt to the different classes and people that I will have. This keeps my safety bubble big enough that I will not freak out over new surroundings. In the gaming community, along with tenacity and adaptability is a skill that got programmed onto me as I was first getting into the community. While playing and most people might groan a lot by this next word choice but Pokémon has greatly help me learn how to analyze weakness and strengths. Now I know that Pokémon for some is a “child’s game”, but I have grown up with Pokémon and will continue to play it till the end. The gameplay has a weakness and resistance mechanic that I have memorized to the letter. It all depends on the Pokémon’s typing, if it has a weakness or not some do some are not. This is useful to me in school because it helped me figure out what I was good at and what I was not. For examples I learned, that I have never needed any help with Math problems they came to me easily once I knew how to work a problem out I understood how the formulas and other math related items. In addition, with this I learned that writing is not my strongest suit and could use some work here and there, mostly with understanding what I am writing about. Soon finding out that I could not do well in stressful situations of having a ton of homework to do everyday while managing a busy work schedule was not a situation I was good at doing. This shows that whatever I am faced with in the academic community that I can back out or get help in any situation that I know I will struggle in,
