Following the wake of the Orlando nightclub shooting-- a travesty that shook the LGBTQ+ community-- Lin-Manuel Miranda stated, “Love is love is love is love is love” during his Tony’s acceptance speech. The opposition toward marriage equality demonstrates that, for some, love only loves when it involves a heterosexual couple. Same-sex marriage is one of the most contentious and heavily debated issues today. Before same-sex marriage was legalized, states were divided on whether it should be legalized, and this difference in opinion extended to the US public. Opponents of legal same-sex marriage argue that gay marriage conflicts with religious beliefs and traditional definitions of marriage. Consistent with the arguments of gay marriage supporters, people, regardless of sexual orientation, should not be barred from marriage because homosexual people deserve the same rights as heterosexual people do; the denial of these constitutional and basic human rights is discriminatory. Homosexual people shouldn’t be barred from marriage because heterosexual and homosexual people deserve the same rights. The Bible condemns it and marriage is for the procreation of men and women. The Bible is also very outdated and an old book shouldn’t be used to justify discrimination. The Constitution states, “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof” (Separation of Church and State). This means for the church to stay out of any state business. Especially, with same-sex marriage, many that are against it believe that it's a sin in their religion. Since some believe that gay marriage is morally wrong and it opposes nature, it isn’t following the traditional marriage, which again is completely outdated and shouldn’t be held against
