Imagine a world where gay couples have the same marriage rights as heterosexual couples. The world would be a better place, less violence, people would be happier, we would all be focused on the best interest of our society, promoting strong couple bonds; right? (“Same-Sex”). Gay marriage rights have been an issue for many years; starting “on May 18, 1970, {when} two University of Minnesota students, applied for a marriage license. The application {was denied}, because the {both of the} applicants {were} men.” (“Gay Marriage Timeline”). The two men sued and stated that the Minnesota law on marriage did not mention anything about gender. The court was not impressed with their statement so they let the case go. Soon after that, on November 21, 1976, a marriage between two men was held in a church in Northwest, Washington, but the Episcopal church refused to give them their blessing. During May of 1993, Hawaii was the first state that gave a gay couple the right to marry, unless the state found a reason that they should not be married. Many years later, gay marriage was legalized in all 50 states, “In June 2015, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled 5–4 that state bans on gay marriage were unconstitutional under the Fourteenth Amendment {in} the Constitution…” (“Gay Marriage”). Even though gay marriage is legal in all 50 states and “21 other countries”, gay couples still do not have the same marriage rights as a straight couple (Chappell) (Waxman). Gay marriages are not widely accepted, especially when it comes to religions.
