Whether we like it or not. It makes us who we are, it controls our personality and our behavior. Think about the last living moments of Geary and Mary Jane Chancey, a married couple whose lives were committed to their 11 year old daughter Andrea, who was restricted to a wheelchair by cerebral palsy. The family were passengers on-board a train which had crashed into a river. Thinking first of Andrea, Geary and Mary Jane tried their best to save her, and managed to push her through a window to rescuers above. Then the train sank, and they both died. Only strong love could make a parent override the impulse for personal survival and save a child from harm. All emotions are, in a sense, urges to act, almost like instant plans for handling life. This is seen most prominently in our core emotions. With anger, blood flows to the hands and arms, making it easier to grab a weapon or to strike an enemy. With fear, blood rushes to the leg muscles, making it easier to run away from any possible danger. The lifting of the eyebrows in surprise is to allow the take-in of a larger visual region and also lets more light hit the retina. This offers more information about the unexpected event, making it easier to understand what is going on and create the best plan of action. The most notable change in love is parasympathetic arousal. this is the complete opposite of the fight or flight response cited in fear and anger. It creates a set of reactions which generate a state of calm and contentment. With happiness, activity in the neo-cortex, specifically in the left pre-frontal lobe, inhibits negative emotions, and helps increase the amount of available
