Charlie and Morrie share many common characteristics between the two of them. One reason they both are similar is that they both have a major disability that they struggle with and also affects their life. For example, Charlie is Autistic and he isn’t capable of being on his own for the most part. Another example is that Morrie has ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis) which is a nervous system disease that weakens muscles and impacts physical function and he isn’t capable for that. Another example is that they both sleep in hospitals at some points in their lifetime because they can’t provide for themselves because of the disabilities they have.
Gender is something that is brought to the attention of people well before people are even brought into the world. Take for instance, when a woman finds out that she is pregnant and is about to have a child. The first question that that women is asked is “What are you having?” In doing this we are automatically emphasizing the importance of being able to identify whether or not to buy “boy” things or “girl” things. As a society we deem it important for each sex to practice a set of “norms” of how to behave via that sex.
In this article, I want to pay attention to the concept of authority in Gadamer’s hermeneutical discourse. I want to argue authority is legitimized if it is based properly on knowledge and acknowledgment. The article questions the Enlightenment views of authority as opposed to reason. The intention is todiscard the Enlightenment views that simply criticized authority on groundless foundations. In doing so, I used different approaches of interpretation on Gadamer’s concept of authority.
