Different societies are defined by deferent norms and beliefs. One aspect that defines society are the roles given to men and women. The Egyptian society is one of the societies that have developed the culture of giving men and women different roles. Despite the changes in gender roles, there are key issues that remain unchanged in the Egyptian society. In the ancient Egyptian society, men and women had varied roles though the roles were equal. Women bore the responsibility of raising children and the domestic relationship. On the other hand, the men were to teach the growing boys on issues related to trade. As the society grew some changes in the society especially in the economy of the society saw the position of women weaken. From the 5th dynasties, women were frequently shown only as part of the group and not as an equal member. It is clear that the earlier dynasties had equal responsibilities for men and women, but this changed over time, and the role of women was now limited (Brettell, & Sargent, 2012). Women in the Egyptian society took care of the needs of the families. This concept developed the idea that women were serving men. In the modern society, women are respected more than in the previous society. The women were allowed to wear western clothes, but they are expected to show some modesty. The idea of modesty is traced from the traditional view that women are expected to be virgins. The society has some reservation on virginity and women are treated with harshness is they are married when they are not virgins. Their treatment of this issue seems harsher than the western society.
