An example of this racism and stereotyping in TV shows made as humor is the ever long lasting show, The Simpsons. A long running joke on this show is the use Hindus only working in grocery stores and giving their owners very stereotypical name for being Hindu. These subtle but racist on going joking, but the public think it is okay to have these racist mindsets. Using stereotypes are also happens frequently in movies.
A black swim top, a pair of culottes, and a pink sweater, just a few of the clothing items Mary Anne brought with her to Vietnam, yet these simple clothing items show us how gender stereotypes were present. In the chapter, Sweetheart of the Song Tra Bong, the reader can see the gender lense throughout the chapter. In the chapter gender stereotypes can be seen, both being reinforced and being undermined. When there is a female involved in any given case, the main thing people tend to focus on is the girls looks. One major gender stereotype is, the way a female dresses.
Most Rap songs involves drugs, murder, and guns like the rapper ‘’21 Savage’’. He raps a lot about money, drugs, and shooting. Most guys that listen to this music becomes mean and aggressive. They feel that Rap songs gives them the power to be bad and cool. Most men in our generation only listens to Rap and Hip-hop.
Black R&B singers and Black male rappers, especially, feel that the only way to exert their power or dominance in a field like the arts is to take the one oppressed character that no will defend, the black woman, and rip her “virtue” to shreds. “Hip Hop is more misogynist and disrespectful to Black girls and women than other popular music genres” (Cole and Guy-Sheftall 186). It is important; however, to note that as stated the misogyny is not just performed by men. Rappers like Lil Kim, Foxy Brown, Hoez with Attitude (HWA), and Bytches with Problem (BWP) also give a hypersexualized performance of black female sexuality that allows this detrimental rhetoric to permeate the minds of listeners and create an image of black women in society. This
In her essay “hip hop’s betrayal of black women,” Jennifer McLune implies that “(h)ip-hop owes its success to the ideology of women-hating” (193). She does not agree with Kevin Powell’s article that hip-hop does not mean to “offend” black women, but instead artists are only letting out their temper throughout their music. McLune feels infuriated that many artists in hip hop (including black men) rap about their community and downgrade their own women. In the hip-hop genre, sexism is mainly used, not only by black men but also by many other race hip-hop artists. Artists assume that women-hating in their rap songs will be accepted by women, but do not realize that it is affecting all women.
Men are the one who are making money off women. Another issue I have with the hip-hop industry is it projects women as the cause of all the violence and misogyny. I also find this very common in this male dominated society. Many
Love and Hip-Hop is a reality show that takes place in multiple places, filming few famous people associated with Hip-Hop. The different locations are taking place in New York City, Atlanta Georgia, California, and soon to come Miami Florida. Over the year Love and Hip-Hop has caught the eyes of young African American people from sixteen to thirty year old male and females. Influencing them to feel like it’s acceptable for males to mistreat females, and for females to accept the treatment. Also Love and Hip-
Most rappers are African-American guys. African-American female rappers began to end up noticeably known in the late 1980s. In the female rap convention, there are four classes in which ladies rappers fit "Ruler Mother," "Fly Girl," "Sistas with Attitude," and "Lesbian." Female African-American rappers can have a place with more than one of these gatherings at any given moment or change from one to alternate (Keyes, 2000). Today there numerous assortments of music known around the world, from pop, established, shake, jazz and R&B, these are only a couple of cases of various sorts or "class" of music that is discovered anyplace you go at all spots.
Most people believe that “lyrics should appeal to us, not degrade us” (Glidden3). There is controversy surrounding “some artists accused of rapping sexually inflammatory lyrics” (Encyclopedia4). The actions of a few is causing people to put a bad label on rap in a whole. This bias opinion is becoming the cause of listeners to believe that rap lyrics “are setting a bad example for kids and teens” (Glidden2). I can understand where this may lead to critics to misapply such distaste to the rap form, but “there are rap artists who don’t use offensive language or portray women in a negative light” (Glidden1).
Hip hop is a major genre of music nowadays. It sparked during the 1970s and was developed mostly by the youth from Black and Latino communities in the Bronx. They shared common struggles such as urban blight, middle-class flight and deindustrialization and talked about these obstacles through music (Darity). Hip-hop is a mostly male dominated field and many songs are rooted in homophobia and misogyny which could be seen as promoting sexism and anti-queerness to its audience. In addition, there are a lot of female artists as well, but with the majority being Black male figures, many people refuse to acknowledge the underlying effects this has on Black women in the industry.
Male rappers will attempt to justify their violent or blasphemous behavior towards women by stating that it heightens their manliness. By putting women down, it feeds the male ego and proves to others their legitimacy as an alpha male. The censorship of certain language within rap music does not alter nor improve the ultimate meaning behind many songs
As the old saying goes, don’t judge a book by its cover, however, judging someone based on the type of music that is in their music library is a whole nother story. There have been various studies done that have showed that the type of music a person listens to affects how they view the world and form different opinions. The completed research also showed that people make assumptions about people based on what kind of music they listen to such as ethnicity, background, social status, political views and even world views. For example, people usually consider people that listen to rock music are rambunctious, rude and probably not very good people. Another example would be that people that listen to rap music are no good thugs or gangsters who
¨If Hip Hop has the ability to corrupt minds, it also has the ability to uplift them.¨ Hip hop music, also called rap music, is a music genre developed in the United States by African Americans consisting of a stylized rhythmic music that commonly accompanies rapping, a rhythmic and rhyming speech that is chanted. Mainstream hip hop culture is also filled with misogyny and negative images of women. These artists are unaware that sexism has been forced onto them through the brainwashing from the media, which is controlled by a patriarchal society. Conversely, feminism is the belief that both genders should have equal power.
Media entertainment, the most sought out medium compels individuals to believe even in the nonexistent things around them. Convincingly, it shares and implicates ideologies such as shape the attitudes and experiences that might pervade in making logical or emotional decisions. Entertainment open doors to a diverse realm of consciousness where people question motives, decisions, opinions, and even reactions. It enriches and allows viewers to separate reality from experience and genuinely teaches tactics on how to control emotions, to interact socially, and the ways to blend in with society. Despite the evolution in the entertainment industry, more concerns and beliefs arise as films introduce viewers to political, socio-cultural, and environmental
The Hip hop industry consists of mostly African American musicians. Since blacks are often alienated in society, their music seems to be too. People often give rappers negative labels such as “gangster” or “thug”, which are discriminatory words that people have often used to describe African Americans in the media. There is an everlasting double standard in music. as people bash rap music for being sexist and violent, other genres of music such as country or alternative have the same themes, but they’re vulgar lyrics go
