Genetic modification and engineering is a rather new and upcoming technology, but to what degree should its abilities be utilized? There are many different forms of genetic engineering that have become a popular topic of debate in the recent years including “designer babies”, cloning, artificial intelligence, genetically modified organisms and much more. One of the largest companies known to be the creators of GMOs is Monsanto, a “sustainable agriculture company” according to their website. They also state they “deliver agricultural products that support farmers all around the world”. Monsanto is part of the “Big Six”, a group of the nation's largest leading corporations of GMOs. The companies included are BASF, Bayer, Dupont, Dow Chemical Company, Monsanto, and Syngenta. Many of these companies have experienced great deals of controversy surrounding their production of genetically modified organisms. This negative press has created a great deal of disputes between the companies and consumers. Millions of people have rallied and debated against these companies, particularly against Monsanto (“What are GMOs?” 1). Monsanto has been the negative limelight for decades now and has grown to be widely known as an opposed company in the United States. They have become one of the most hated companies in America, igniting many campaigns against the company. The “Millions Against Monsanto” campaign was created by the Organic Consumers Association in order to fight back against a company that they claim makes life-threatening foods. A “#monsantoevil” project has also been started on various different social media platforms in order to campaign against Monsanto. People are not only angry about the GMOs they produce, but also the fact that they are opposed of labeling foods that contain GMOs. Consumers should have the right to know what is in their food, and what they are eating (“Millions Against Monsanto” 1). If GMOs are going to be sold in stores, they should at least be labeled so that people can know what they are consuming, and so that people can make personal choices on whether GMO consumption is something they personally believe in.
