Perhaps arguably one of the most influential and controversial directors in American Cinema History, Spike Lee's filmography has become woven into the fabric of urban cinema. Like fellow directors such as Martin Scorsese and sometimes rival Quentin Tarantino, Lee's unique style of cinematography has both transcended and placed emphasis on appreciation for his respective cultural aesthetic. Many urban directors can attest that their respective styles in film and even music videos all come from or are inspired by Spike Lee. Aside from his ever creative filmography, it can be said that Lee's personal perspective shines most in his documentary work. Known generally to be outspoken, Lee's documentary work has historically touched on socio-political
Auteur theory is an important mode of film criticism that indicates the extent of the director’s involvement in the final output of the film. As it has been previously mentioned, Spike Lee’s films express certain notions about race that emerge from his personal viewpoint as well as from his political and aesthetic beliefs. The focal point of this chapter is the auteur theory and its relativity to Spike Lee. In order to prove the connection between the theory and his works, it is necessary to refer to Lee’s biography, since both his background and distinguishable personality have contributed to his technical skills as well as to his unique style as a film director. The particular chapter will also include the synopsis as well as the technical analysis of each film correspondingly.

The Monkey King felt that he wasn't being respected due to his title. He was so shaken up from the dinner party incident that he completely gave himself a new look, a new name, a new title, practically a new identity. The main character is busy barricading the house to make it safer, Mr. Cooper is in the basement waiting for Ben to do all the work and take all the risks, much like slave owners did many years ago. Correspondingly, throughout the movie Ben is betrayed and held back by the white people around him, just as the African Americans have been for many years. The ending of this film is graphic and symbolic, as it shows the African American character being murdered and treated like something other than human, he is shot, but there are no repercussions for the shooter, instead he is praised by the sheriff. After Ben is shot the hunting party is shown sinking their meat hooks into him to bring Ben’s body to the fire to be burned. Meat hooks are used by butchers not only to move meat, but to hang it as well.

Butch was starting to slip out of consciousness again, he desperately tried to hold onto reality, he knew if he passed out know he wouldn’t wake up again. His mouth was now filling up with blood, his chest starting to lose feeling entirely, and his leg aching with the knife still embedded in it and his hands, although cold and numb, were unbound. He had no weapons, they were all lying in the corner of the cabin, but without them he still wasn’t completely inadequate. Butch began to formulate a plan, if he was going to die here, this bastard was going to die with him. He looked up at the man and spit, shooting all of the blood from his mouth straight into the man's eyes, in the quick moment of surprise and disgust the strange man had, Butch ripped the knife from his thigh, pausing briefly afterwards to try and fight back the excruciating pain, the quickly jabbing the knife into the man’s stomach, he then pulled the pistol from the holster on the man’s side and pointed it at the stranger, and started firing, the first bullet hit his stomach, the second hit his shoulder, then his leg, then the hip, the chest, then the face.
The film “Raging Bull” made in 1980 by Martin Scorsese was based on a self destructive, highly emotional boxer named Jake La Motta as he battles through life. As his fierce attitude and violent temper takes him to the top of ring it ruins his family and life outside of boxing. Throughout the film we discussed the importance of the cinematography through out the film and why it played such an important role in developing “Raging bull”. Also the theme of anger and violence is displayed throughout the film. Jake never changes, from start to finish he is an emotional wreck, isolated and quick tempered.
Themes of Whiteness in Bulletproof Monk, Kill Bill, and The Last Samurai The subject for the above reading includes the issue of white movie actors taking over the martial arts film industry that had previously been dominated by Asian actors such as Bruce Lee. Steven Seagal, Van Damme, and Chuck Norris represent some of the white actors that took over the martial art film industry. The writer has indicated that the whiteness themes influence the narrative structure of the films, perpetuating a single ideological aspect of whiteness, such as the view that the whites are more superior to the rest of the actors. It also creates a perception that the white’s superiority in the film industry gives them an upper hand to perform bigger roles, even if there are other race groups, in this case, the Asians that can do much better.

Coming of age has many aspects and undergoes changes throughout time, as Daniel Jones states, “What began as a way to fictionalize how a child became an adult became complicated throughout the centuries by other issues. Race, class, and gender all play a pivotal role in how a youth is expected to grow into an adult in various societies”. To reiterate, coming of age is about experiencing various facets of human life, and this journey, which is certainly not a simple one, differs from person to person. As coming of age is an experience that every reader can relate to, it is a prominent theme in literature, especially literature with a target audience of teens and young adults. Baz Luhrmann is known world wide for his eccentric and flamboyant film-making style. Luhrmann’s signature bright colours, fast-paced camera-cuts and zooms, and bold costumes are all key characteristics of his films and assist Luhrmann in putting forward the themes and motifs he regards as essential in each of his works. However, Luhrmann still receives much criticism for not staying true to the original source material of the stories he introduces to the big screen. One fails to realize the fact that, “Luhrmann’s films are not so much adaptations as re-imaginings” (Vogue Magazine) and through analysis of his various techniques, as well as his overall cinematic language in his films, “Strictly Ballroom” (1992), “Romeo + Juliet” (1996) and “The Great Gatsby”, one can see this clearly, through Luhrmann’s evolution as a director. Luhrmann makes his films his own from the start, the opening scenes of all three of these films implement post-modern techniques which instantly informs the audience that they are entering into Luhrmann’s
