“George’s hand remained outstretched imperiously. Slowly, like a terrier who doesn’t want to bring a ball to its master, Lennie approached, drew back, approached again. George snapped his fingers sharply, and at the sound Lennie laid the mouse in his hand.” (Steinbeck 9). Lennie is described as a terrier, which creates a connection between him and Candy’s dog.
When Lennie tries to hide the dead mouse from George, George sees the mouse and demands Lennie to give him the mouse. Lennie then approaches George, “Slowly, like a terrier who doesn’t want to bring a ball to its master” (Steinbeck 9). Later, Carlson kills the old dog in the same way that George kills Lennie, by shooting him in the head. As well as using descriptions

Paulsen was constantly learning their ways; how they thought, moved, acted. The bond between man and dog is truly understood and explained through this novel.
62 “You will have to take me at my word, however, that His favorite among all the sports was baseball. How did I know this? Because I knew my dog very well and it had To do with the look in his eye when he was around baseball, And also with that particular time and place.”

As the dog lost its serviceability, it lived on with age and suffered, thus had to be put down in order to prevent it from suffering any longer. Contrary to this, Lennie was one of the most useful members of the farm. His strength making it easy to do certain things, his mentality however, was something else, like that of an ignorant, innocent child. Even when a girl screamed, Lennie became “scared all he can think to do is jus’ hold on.” (Steinbeck, 41) Unbeknownst to Lennie and George, his natural innocence and ignorance, will whittle down his usefulness until nothing's left.
Lennie explains to George “ I could pet it with my thumb while we walked along.” This foreshadows the event of Lennie murdering Curley’s wife. The theme is created by showing Lennie's intentions being positive, but in the end his plans went so far askew leading him to murder a man’s wife. Steinbeck uses the event of Candy’s dog being shot to foreshadow George’s struggle
He bent the pup’s head up and looked in its face, and he said to it, ‘Now maybe George ain’t gonna let me tend no rabbits, if he fin’s out you got killed.’ He scooped a little hollow and laid the puppy in it and covered it over with hay, out of sight; but he continued to stare at the mound he had made. He said, ‘This ain’t no bad thing like I got to go hide in the brush. Oh! No.

Candy´s dog is killed , simply for the fact that he is aging , and ¨ smells bad¨ . Due to his old age , he is rendered useless. Candy insinuates that the same will happen to him when he becomes incompetent of fulfilling his duties . The quote ¨ I ought to of shot that dog myself, George. I shouldn´t ought to have let no stranger shoot my dog.¨ ( 89 ) symbolizes the companionship you also find in george and lennie.
Mark Twain believes that dogs are superior to man because out of all animals, man is the only one that is cruel enough to inflict pain on others just for the pleasure of doing it. Twain’s short story “A Dog’s Tale”, written in 1903, displays these beliefs and is done so from a dog’s point of view. This unusual take on the story is used to help convey the theme that one shouldn’t assume the others will do the same for them. The story includes literary elements such as characterisation, structural irony and a plot and conflict. It is a story of a loyal and heroic dog which unfortunately ends in an ironic twist of fate.
