1984 is a dystopian novel, written by George Orwell. The story is based in the country, Oceania. The Party of Oceania has a constant eye on the citizens of the nation. They are watched and heard even in their houses through telescreens. The Party leader, Big Brother and his followers seek power for their sake and not for the common good of the public. The Party alters and controls all forms of news and history that is accessible to the public to shape the opinion of the public accordingly. The party was also making changes in the existing language. The new language was called Newspeak, which consisted of lesser number of words, thus making it harder for the public to express themselves. Though he worked for the Party, he was frustrated by the oppression of the party as it prohibited all expressions of an individual. He purchased a diary illegally from Mr Charington, and would pen down his thoughts in it. He fixates on a powerful Party member, O’Brien, who he believes is an agent of the Brotherhood (secret organisation that intended on destroying the Party). One day, a beautiful dark haired girl from the ministry (Julia), who he considered to be an informant to the Party, gave Winston a note confessing her love for him. Soon they started meeting in secret and thus progressed their secret affair. Winston was pessimistic about their relationship as he was certain that it wouldn’t be too long before the Party members found out whereas Julia was optimistic about their relationship and believed they could keep it a secret.
