From an early age, I have perpetually known that I will make significant accomplishments in my life. I have always been intrigued by science and nature, and I wanted to make an impact on something or someone but on a grand scale. My interests led me into the field of Geosciences where I have determined to become a geoscientist. A geoscientist is a scientist who studies the physical aspects of the earth, such as the composition, structure, and process to learn about its past, present and future. Their duties vary each day. I could be in a laboratory experimenting one day, in a field in east African another day, or writing a scientific report the next day. The working conditions of a geoscientist differ each day as well, and ranges from working in the outdoors, a lab or an office. They are continually migrating from location to location and may work irregular hours. To be hired for an entry-level job in the geoscience field, a bachelor’s degree in geoscience is required. However, if one decides to extend their services to the public, they must be a licensed geoscientist. At my current college of Georgia State University, we offer degrees in geosciences. From my interview with Daniel M. Deocampo Ph.D., he disclosed to me that companies hire employers directly after graduation. In fact, in Atlanta is the primary city for employers hiring geoscientists in this region. In the next ten years, the job outlook for employment of geoscientists is expected to increase by 14 percent, and this rate is faster than the average for all other occupations. The average salary for geoscientists is $106,099/yr. The highest paid entry-level jobs are located in Texas, specifically Houston.
