What is Stroke
Stroke is a common and significant health concern worldwide which everyone should be aware of. Also known as brain attack, stroke is the number two leading cause of disability and death around the world. It occurs by one of these two conditions: a blockage to the blood supply leading to the brain (also known as ischemic stroke) or leakage of blood into the brain tissue due to bursting of blood vessel. Stroke can affect anyone and therefore, it is important to be informed of this condition to help you and the people you care about overcome stroke, or even prevent it from happening.  In Europe, there are approximately 650,000 deaths yearly due to stroke.
 In China, stroke sufferers are estimated to be about 1.3 million yearly, and more than half of them are left with disabilities.
What Causes Stroke
 Among those older than 60 years of age, stroke is predominantly due to the presence of heart disease while in those who are younger, sickle cell disease and hypertension (or increased blood pressure) are the leading causes.
 Approximately 12.7 million cases of stroke around the world are caused by high and uncontrolled blood pressure.
Who Are Affected by Stroke
 A person’s medical condition and lifestyle are important determinants of the risk of having a stroke. Individuals with increased chance of developing stroke include those with high and uncontrolled blood pressure, high levels of cholesterol, with history of heart disease in the family, are smokers, obese, and those who have excessive intake of alcohol.
 Race is recognized as playing an important part in the occurrence of stroke. Native Americans have an increased chances of getting stroke compared with other racial groups. African Americans have reportedly almost twice the stroke risk for Caucasians while the risk for Hispanics is somewhere in between these 2 racial
