Many individuals have a different idea of what is considered a “true education”. Francine Prose, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Sherman J. Alexie Jr, Margaret Talbot, James Baldwin, and Kyoko Mori all have different opinions on what contributes to a true education. I do not think that Warren High School serves the goals of a true education in entirety. First of all, Francine Prose, reporter, essayist, critic, and editor from the late 90’s, states in her article I Know Why the Caged Bird Cannot Read, ““Given the fact that these early encounters with literature leave such indelible impressions, it would seem doubly important to make sure that high school students are actually reading literature.” Prose is stating that the curriculum in many schools is …show more content…
Emerson says that adults of children need to encourage their children to be the best they can be. He states in his article, “It is not for you to choose what he shall know, what he shall do. It is chosen and foreordained, and he only holds the key to his own secret.” This means that every child has a talent that is waiting to come out. Emerson speaks about how schools just apply rules, this will cause students to lose their want to learn. All students start with a will to learn and a want to do it, but the schools ruin that. I think the Warren school district also just applies rules. Many students in the Warren school do not appreciate learning. Emerson would think this is due to the school causing them to lose their will to learn. He believes that teachers stick to these rules because they have so many classes in one day. This means less time to have lessons that are outside of the box. Warren school teachers have many classes in a day. This means they do not have a lot of time to work towards fun lectures and …show more content…
Baldwin states, “You must understand that in the attempt to correct so many generations of bad faith and cruelty, when it is operating not only in the classroom but in society, you will meet the most fantastic, the most brutal, and most determined resistance.” He is saying that, this generation is cruel and they will not be corrected easily. Students really are cruel. There are students in the Warren school district that will do anything to ruin a teacher’s day. Baldwin goes on to say, “What societies really, ideally, want is a citizenry which will simply obey the rules of society.” He is saying that today’s society wants people who will just follow the rules, not be different, and one who will not try to change the society for the better by breaking or bending some rules. This applies to Warren because a student will do anything to become number one in the class or to be the best student, even if this is not the smartest to
