Redemption for Inmates

As a society we are so quick to judge incarcerated men and women, when we should be getting them the help the need. Many people believe that inmates still deserve another chance to be in society no matter the crime they have committed. These people rely on the prisons to lead the inmates back onto the right path, by having goals for their prison. The goals of prisons are many, however their overriding goals can be clearly seen which are rehabilitation, retribution, and deterrence.
To begin, rehabilitation is something that should be in every prison because it helps modify an inmate by changing their beliefs, values and behaviors while helping the inmate reintegrate themselves into society. From the 1950’s to the 1970’s …show more content…

Another popular rehabilitation program is cognitive/behaviour. This program help reshapes a felon’s thinking process, and makes them learn to take responsibility for their actions which in turn will help refrain them from making the same choices over again. There’s also a program the help inmates have entry-level job experience helping them which they will find useful when they are released out of prison. With job experience ex- felon’s, it will make it easier to help them find jobs so they don’t have to go back to committing crimes which in the end will reduce recidivism “that gives inmates actual job skills they may use upon release without work, they may find it difficult to pay for rent, food, and other basic necessities” (Bayley, Gutierrez, Stringham, & Kapenda 2012). There are two types of deterrence one is specific and the other is general. Specific deterrence is the hope to stop an offender to re-offend, like a person getting a speed ticket. General deterrence is the effect a punishment has, for example by punishing a criminal, it could be used to make an example of the man or women “When the public learns of an individual defendant’s punishment, the public is theoretically less likely to commit a crime because of fear of the punishment the defendant experienced” (Criminal Law 2015). Deterrence prevents people to commit crimes since they will be punished accordingly. One of the biggest reason people fear prison is because of the stories they hear from people and the things they seen in movies, tv show, etc. They are also afraid of losing their freedom, privacy and must live in horrible conditions “They believe that depriving criminals of their freedom and forcing them to live in poor conditions is fair” (Simon, 1993; Zimring and Hawkins, 1995). Deterrence is a method that works on some criminals but not all, putting fear into them does help these inmates to stop committing crimes and help them back onto the right
