Brother the main character in the the Scarlet Ibis by James Hurst has many problems. Most of these problems relate to his brother Doodle who is physically challenged. Throughout the story Brother tries to help Doodle with his weaknesses, but forgets to care about his own. Brother's mistreatment of Doodle eventually allows Brother to recognize his own weakness. First of all, when brother teaches Doodle to walk he decides to teach him to, "Swim until he turned blue and until he couldn't lift an oar"(Hurst 180).
Brother took a lot of his own time to help teach Doodle things like to walk. Everyone said that Doodle would never be able to stand up, but brother was tired of lugging doodle everywhere so he taught him how to walk. ”I'm going to teach you to walk doodle”(Hurst 2). With everything that brother did to help out Doodle to become a normal a normal person meant a lot to Doodle. Doodle was the only thing
The brother is to blame for doodles death. Doodle was a disabled young child with a selfish brother that only looks out for himself. His brother was ashamed to be with or around him. One of the biggest reasons wanted him dead is because he was embarrassed to be around him. The three reasons I believe that the brother wanted to kill doodle was he was embarrassed, he pushed him to hard, and he was selfish.
I do believe the brother did have to have some love for Doodle, he gave him his name after all. On page 345 it says, “It was I who renamed him… Crawling backward made him look like a doodlebug so I began to call him Doodle. Renaming my brother was perhaps the kindest thing I ever did for him, because nobody expects much from someone called Doodle.” But all in all if this brother truly had a sincere love for Doodle he would never have done the things he did to him or had any of the thoughts I’ve mentioned above.
In the story, The Scarlet Ibis, Doodles brother is responsible his death. He was born with many birth defects and wasn't normal. Doodle wanted a brother that could do anything. Doodle had a older brother that was 6 when he was born. Doodles brother is responsible for the death for these reasons:he was embarrassed by doodles conditions,he learned techniques that wasn't good for the heart,and mistreated throughout the story.
Although Brother's reasons for helping Doodle are driven by selfishness, Doodle does benefit from them
James Hurst in "The Scarlet Ibis" uses the brother to illustrate that both selfish and caring motivations can help someone succeed. Not only caring acts, but also selfish acts can help people succeed. The brother actions leave positive and negative results that affect Doodle’s life. In spite of his natural feelings of pride, or perhaps because of them, the brother cares and loves Doodle.
In the short story The Scarlet Ibis the narrator is a bad brother. He does malevolent and egoistic things to make himself feel better. He most of the things with doodle because he is either forced or for self pride and have a selfish and egoistic ground to them. He does things to Doodle sometimes just to be malicious. This goes off the sense that most good deeds have evil roots.

Doodle and Simon were always the underdogs and wanted to be accepted. Doodle wasn’t accepted by his brother whereas Simon’s brother always looked at him like an equal. Brother put lots of his time, effort, and care into Doodle even though "It's a miracle [he] didn't give up" (Hurst). His efforts showed the pride he had, or at least wanted to have in his younger sibling; even if it was rooted in selfishness.
