The Gospel of Mark is the oldest and shortest of the gospels. It starts off with the baptism of Jesus Christ. This is unique to the Gospel of Mark in that the other three gospels begin with the story of Jesus’s birth. Jesus Christ is baptised by John the Baptist in the Jordan River, and experiences divine intervention. This intervention was of the Holy Spirit coming down and God's voice speaks to Jesus,saying, “You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased” (Mark 1:11). From the baptism story, Jesus starts his mission in finding disciples and spreading the word of God. This is the point at which Jesus starts performing miracles. Jesus performed several miracles to show God’s power over humanity and nature. The characteristics of a miracle include defeat sin, restore creation, and emphasise the word of God as a microcosm of the Kingdom of God (Mueller, The Gospel of Mark, October/2017). He pushes an evil spirit out of a boy and in this, he teaches that one cannot pray for a miracle to happen but must have faith (Mark 9:23). This miracle displays all of the characteristics because Jesus dismisses an evil, or sinful, spirit from the boy, and this restores him to his natural spirit. The miracle emphasises the word of God as a glimpse at his kingdom because Jesus shows that in faith one’s soul can be renewed.
