Years back, when I heard someone say they are taking a major in statistics, I felt like saluting them just like the police do to a head of state. I felt that I needed such respect and as such developed interest in statistics. I have developed a strong interest in this field for over five years and have participated in numerous programs that have been imperative in fueling my passion for statistics. The field gives me the chance to learn some of the most relevant and exciting uses of statistics today and the chance to apply the knowledge I will gain to different fields. When I overcome any barrier I face, I always feel confident in myself satisfied. I believe that educational barriers can sabotage a great day of training or hinder a student from achieving academic excellence. Fear of failure is one of the educational barriers that I have faced. Days back, I was uncertain about myself, and I often felt that I am certain to fail and sometimes doubt my ability to complete the different tasks involved in a course. Fear of failure had affected my inclination towards education and had made my motivation to learn to suffer to the point that my overall outlook on life was about to break. The intensity of the fear had become extreme since I had started becoming reluctant to take risks in life and school. This barrier had me fail to realize my true potential in school and later in life because it was based on my perceptions and emotions. I overcame this problem when I realized I should set my own standards. I conquered the fear of failure when I started seeing the true value of education. It came to my senses that should see the real value of education instead of seeing it as means to win approval or impress my lecturers, friends, and family. Initially, my notion was that my grades are what define me, but I changed from that notion, and that helped me overcome the fear of failure.
I taught myself how to accept myself. I believe that students should learn how to accept their weaknesses and strengths and that I what I did. I was no need to compare performance and grades, and I had to come up with my own definition of success and avoided molding my identity onto other individual’s idea of excellence. Success in an education setting is all about motivation. As such, I tried as much as I could to find adventure in education. Having a sense of adventure helped me to be open to failures and part of my educational journey.
