Our world is filled with heroes and it is evident that they are representatives of the ideals of our culture and society, but what is a hero? In today’s terms, heroes could be anyone who has proven themselves worthy. It does not matter their size, race, or gender. Instead, it is dependant on their merit. Even throughout history, ancient heroes such as Achilles, Horus, and King Arthur are examples of the distinct portrayal of that society’s ideals for heroism. Heroes, whether modern or ancient, are similar because of their traits, how they represent their culture, and the journeys that these heroes are sent on. A modern hero can be defined by three characteristics. The first is their accomplishments, a hero’s actions are beyond that of the normal capacity which makes people want to emulate their success. They couldn’t be more different in terms of the times that they come from, but they do have their similarities. First off the standards for a Greek hero were slightly different from those of today. The perfect image of Greek heroism was often someone who embraced their morality, had great strength, and possessed an impermanent death (Awana). Today, we still value the embrace of a hero’s morality because it brings them closer to us in a way. Both of these heroes are highly intelligent and they tend to flaunt that. Iron Man continues to improve his suit which is far beyond the current technology threshold and Odysseus seeks to trick all of his foes. They also are characters that were created during or after times of war. Iron Man was created during the height of the Cold War. While Odysseus was created by Homer after the Trojan War. Their adventures inspired thousands of people in their society and will probably continue to inspire for years to
