Success is not always determined by how smart you are or by the people you know. Success is achieved by something called grit. Grit is the will-power and determination to push yourself to reach long term goals. “The quality of being able to sustain your passions, and also work really hard at them, over really disappointingly long periods of time, that’s grit”, is the definition psychology professor and founder of the term “grit”, Angela Lee Duckworth gives us Sin(Duckworth). For example a college student with grit is much more likely to succeed than someone without it. Grit will make you work harder and give you the mindset needed to complete even the most seemingly impossible goals.

When you see someone who is successful, do you ever wonder how they accomplished such success? There are many characteristics of a successful person. Passion, talent, and patience are just a few examples of these characteristics. While any good quality in a person can contribute to their success what is the most helpful? The answer is grit. As we all know college can be quite difficult. With all of the work and studying some students find themselves wanting to give up or feeling like failures. Unfortunately those students lack grit. For this exact reason grit can really help you succeed in college without quitting. A gritty student would find a way to persevere even after failing multiple times. A student who completes assignments days before the deadline could be considered gritty. Since college is one assignment after another grit really does play a huge role in the completion of work on time. The great thing about having grit is that you aren’t required to be a genius or the most popular human being to become a successful person.
