In Grit: The Power of Passion and Perseverance author Angela Duckworth highlights two essential concepts. One proposal introduced is purpose and how our individual actions affect the well-being of others. The intention of our actions and efforts is to reach a special end goal, which always pays dividends to others. The passion is so imperative to you personally, it motivates and drives you to pursue and explore its significance. The key to purpose starts with a spark, then by observing someone who is purposeful, and finally discovering a problem that needs solving. Duckworth’s second concept is pleasure and how each person considers themselves first by pinpointing an area of interest. As I dove into the text, I found myself instantly hooked because the genuine purpose found by people to help others. People weren’t just aiding others because they felt they had to, they were doing it because what their pursing had purpose, “They mean something much deeper than mere intention. They're not just goal oriented; the nature of their goals is special” (Duckworth 10). The motive to help the greater good was the first thing that stood out to me in Duckworth’s story because no matter how old you are you can find a purpose in this world. Jane Golden’s anecdote about having lupus and her odds of living couldn't have been a more compelling story to me. With all the odds stacked against her, she battled and continued her passion to build one of the largest art programs in the world; “There are moments when I cry. I think I just can’t do it anymore, push that boulder up the hill. But feeling sorry for myself is pointless, so I find ways to get energized.”(Duckworth 10). I felt connected with Jane Golden because there are days when I truly don’t feel good enough and I honestly feel like giving up the sport I love, but I remember I’m blessed, healthy, and don't have time to complain.
