It can be argued that Grit and the Growth Mindset combined can alleviate achieve

success. The concept of having Grit is to master something not just to accomplish it, but to do so

with time and effort. The concept of attaining a Growth Mindset is to not let negative situations

impact your life by turning them into positive ones. An advantage of having the skill of Grit is

that individuals acquire persistence and stamina which can be distributed to achieving success.

An advantage of having a Growth Mindset is that individuals develop positive attitudes and

behavior which will give them a better perspective on life. Being gritty can help an individual

According to Emily Hanford’s article “Angela Duckworth and the Research on Grit”, the

definition of Grit is “sticking with things over the very long term until you master them” (p.46).

“In other words, Hanford believes that being gritty means you will perfect a task no matter how

long it takes to be accomplished.” For instance, being an “A” student was always my goal since

I’ve entered high school. It wasn’t easy but as Hanford states, “the gritty individual approaches

achievement as a marathon” (p.46). I pushed and worked harder than usual to achieve my goal. I

studied every time I had an opportunity. I stayed in my classes during my lunch period when I

didn’t understand a topic. I practically gave up my social life and meeting new people to better

myself and ensure that I would get the grades I wanted. Although I experienced failure I still

achieved, demonstrating how gritty I was to succeed.

In the article “Mindset” by Carol Dweck, having a Growth Mindset can be described as,

“Even in the growth mindset failure can be a painful experience. But it doesn’t define you. It’s a

problem to be faced, dealt with, and learned from” (p.77). “Therefore, Dweck explains
