this book, Angela Duckworth reveals to us that the successful people in life have one thing in common, grit. She conducts research and reveals that grittier people are likely to succeed than those who have talent, IQ and other factors.
Having talent did not mean that one was gritty. Duckworth discovers this when she went to teach Maths. The students that were not talented but put effort passed more than the talented ones who never put effort. This is where she realizes that as much as talent counts effort counts twice.

Grit is not something you work hard on and love it’s about staying in love as you work. Grit has two components, passion and perseverance. Although they make grit, they are very different. Passion is loving what you do while perseverance is working really hard and being resilient about what you do. Duckworth realized that those with higher intelligence combined with a higher degree of persistence would achieve more than those with same intelligence but less persistence.
Grit comes out from persons who epitomize qualities of passion and perseverance. Duckworth’s research reveals some psychological assets that mature paragons of grit having in common; interest, practice, purpose and hope. These four tend to develop over the years.
Interest comes first. Duckworth insists that for interest to be there one should find something he or she enjoys and spends time doing. After discovering and developing the interest next comes practice.
Practice should be done on a daily basis. One must zero in weaknesses and do whatever it takes to improve. Next comes purpose. What ripens passion is that your work matters. The author Steven Silbiger identifies factors that make the Jews so successful. Silbiger believes that if we use and apply them in our communities we would also be successful.
The Jews believe that real wealth is knowledge. They have learnt on how to fully embrace and execute education. It is not just about finishing college but what you would want to pursue in your life and how it will make you earn money.
Silbiger tells us the Jews are also a philanthropic class. They believe in the biblical saying that one is wealthy as the amount one is able to give. They supported both non Jews and Jews which resulted in building good relations with non Jews, increased funds and increased power and influence.
