I have referred to the Gulf of Mexico oil spill in order to answer this question. The Gulf of Mexico oil spill is also referred to as the BP oil spill, the BP oil disaster, the Deepwater Horizon oil spill, & the Macondo Blowout. The Gulf of Mexico oil spill started on the 20th of April 2010 & finally ended on the 15th of July 2010. British Petroleum’s Deepwater Horizon drilling platform exploded in the Gulf of Mexico, which led to the deaths of 11 workers and the spillage of 210 Million gallons of crude oil into the Gulf of Mexico. The Deepwater Horizon Oil Rig was situated in the Macondo oil prospect in the Mississippi Canyon which is located in the Gulf of Mexico, and is approximately 41 miles (66 km) off the coast of Louisiana. The core was a bit too weak due to composing a concrete mixture which used nitrogen gas to speed up curing, which is the reason it could not handle the pressure and cracked. With the help of the crack of the core, the natural gas travelled up to the Rig and ignited. The rig sank two days after the explosion, and led to the breaking of the riser through which drilling mud had been injected in order to oppose the pressure due to which the oil began to discharge into the gulf. The volume of oil escaping the damaged well was estimated by BP to be around 1,000 barrels per day, which was estimated by the US officials to be more than 60,000 barrels per day. In early July the LMRP cap was removed for several days so that a more permanent seal could be installed; this capping stack was in place by July 12. Though the leak had slowed, it was estimated that 4.9 million barrels of oil had already leaked into the gulf. Only about 800,000 barrels had been captured. The day before the accident, the crew had pumped cement to the bottom of the borehole, a standard procedure intended to prevent oil leaking out. On the day of the accident, the team were conducting checks to determine that that the well had been properly sealed. Apart from this issue, the security systems which were installed in order to prevent such a disaster to happen did not
