In the book, Charles is shown multiple times as cold and controlling. He tells Anne to do things and gets mad at her for comforting their baby saying he needs to learn to manage his own feelings. however in real life all articles point to his heart break over his son being gone. Charles in real life knows the best chance to get his son back is by asking for help. “Colonel Lindbergh asked friends to communicate with the kidnappers, and they made widespread appeals for the kidnappers to start negotiations.” (FBI official report).
