Decrees, via verbal or written, are designed to control behavior and maintain safe and functioning societies. Since Hammurabi authored the first written code of laws, civilizations throughout time continually shepherd their citizens toward a desired behavior. In theory, decrees guide our everyday actions to create an orderly society. Whenever individuals fail to adhere to the rules of society, then punishment is administered based on the violation committed. Rules apply to everyone from the White House to the school house. Similar to society’s code of behavior, schools administer to instruct students to engage in proper behavior. True transformative administrative leadership extends beyond understanding their students to comprehending the community their students live within. Years ago, schools functioned to provide students with knowledge, however, the objectives of schools evolved within the last twenty five years. As numerous low income communities crumble due to societal pressures the purpose of a school transformed from a place of education to one that comprises of education, health-care, nutrition, shelter, mental health, and safety. Society ask schools to accommodate the ever growing lists of student needs. Schools can’t create a legacy of transformational change without community involvement. Reflecting back to our failed after school program I know why we failed. As a school we failed to ask the community to help create the program with us. More importantly, we failed to reach out to the community when problems began to arise.
