“Hard writing makes easy reading. Easy writing makes hard reading” - William Zinsser. While I was growing up, writing and reading were difficult concepts for me to grasp. I had a lot of difficulty trying to think of something to write for school. The subject I wrote about had to be something that interested me, not something that a teacher gave to me. Getting started was exceptionally challenging, especially with subjects that required specific details. Now when it came to reading, I loved reading books that were very interesting to me. Of course I loathed reading things that I found boring or uninteresting. I had to make myself like what I read in order to complete homework. English class started out like any other day. People were sneezing and coughing. I entered the bland colored classroom and took a seat next to my friend Jelisa. The room was really too warm, and I could barely keep my eyes open. The teacher stood in front of the class and began talking about the lesson. I’m not sure if I was in a daze or if I actually fell asleep. I was so accustomed to not paying attention that I ended up just barely catching what was said. I heard her say that we were going to write a paper on a book that we actually owned. It was shocking. Writing an essay on a book of my choice was awesome. I loved writing about Marked: A House of Night a novel by P.C. Cast and Kristen Cast, and that book was what got me interested in reading. My Aunt Tess took me to Barnes and Noble several times throughout the summer, and at that time, the store fascinated me. I spent hours searching for books that interested me. As a result, I started collecting more and more books to the point where I had to get a bookshelf in my room. I enjoyed it so much that my dreams would often form into the stories I was reading at the time. I noticed that I couldn't help but be excited about starting a new book. I would look up words I did not understand just so I wouldn’t feel lost while reading. This helped me to understand Shakespeare’s Othello and The Metamorphosis.
