Baby Alive! A toy that prepares young girls for motherhood! Gender roles in society are imposed upon us through many different ways such us what we are expected to wear and even how we are supposed to behave. Before being born, children are assigned a gender because of their sex and from there one their parents decide what their name will be, what colors they will wear, what toys they will like, etc. For female children, parents buy them toys that are assigned to their gender such as baby dolls. As advertised in a Hasbro commercial for the Baby Alive dolls, all the children that appear on the commercial are girls and so are the babies they are carrying. This reveals how they want the doll to be exclusively for girls without necessarily saying it. Hasbro brands only targets girls for this commercial because caring for a child and being a natural at it is something that is seen as a norm for girls but not for boys. They target young girls by making it seem as if caring for a child is something fun and easy to do when in reality caring for a child comes with many difficulties. Furthermore, having male children in these commercials would not be of major importance for the company because males are not seen as having even the slightest interest in wanting to be a father when they are young. However, females are expected to want to be mothers at such a young age. Toy commercials made for boys tend to display more violence and a sense of masculinity because those are the gender norms for them. In addition, the commercial displays a diversity of race with the dolls and the children in the commercial as well. In the Baby Alive commercial, the race of the dolls are Caucasian, African American, hispanic. The race of the little girls in the commercial also pertain to the same race as the dolls. This implies a universal understanding that the gender role for all girls is seen as that of a caretaker no matter what race you are or where you come
