The documentary Head Games directed by Steve James follows former football player and ex-wrestler, Chris Nowinski, on his mission to uncover the truth about the consequences of playing sports related to concussions. A concussion is a brain injury that you cannot see and where the brain moves around in the skull. More than 3.8 million concussions occur a year due to a sport. The documentary raises the question of whether protective head-gear should be worn in all contact sports. I believe a head is more likely to sustain more damage to the brain without a helmet than a head with a helmet.
In the past few years, the number of concussions per year has only spiked. The NFL calls it a “cultural change” in that the staff are more willing to report head injuries instead of neglecting them. However, to many like Christopher Nowinski- one of the founders of the Concussion Legacy foundation- this increase just shows that the NFL does not care to prevent head injuries, only treat them when they are developed. However, it is also important to note that a concussion can also take place outside of sports, meaning it can happen to anybody. For instance, there have been incidents where a person tripped while running, fell, and the impact of their head’s contact with the ground caused a concussion. Or, in a car accident many front-seat passengers, or even the driver, have slammed their heads against the dashboard/steering wheel, also possibly resulting in a concussion. Concussions when treated can be healed in a timely manner. Unfortunately, throughout history, there has been a tendency for people to overlook a concussion as a serious injury, therefore, making it more problematic than it already is.
Sports-related concussions might just be the biggest worry for any athlete at any level. Concussions are something that just about every athlete typically deals with at some point in their sports career. Everyone knows that injuries occur when you play sports, especially concussions,. Which can sideline an athlete for weeks or even forever. Many student-athletes have experienced this issue that can easily be resolved from informative training that is well organized.
Concussions in Sports In sports, concussions occur frequently across all age groups. From little leagues to high school sports to the professional leagues, concussions pose a high risk of long term Traumatic brain injuries. Because of the high rate of concussions in sports more attention should be paid to protocols and treatment to prevent traumatic brain injuries. High school athletes that partake in a sport that requires intense physical activity are the most vulnerable to concussion and need more time to recover. According to the Head Case “High school football accounts for 47 percent of all reported sports concussions, with 33 percent of concussions occurring during practice.”
Many athletes are injured every year. These injuries sometimes are career ending and ruin dreams of great players. In football alone there are nearly 15 concussions a season. This could cause major problems in the future for these athletes. After, the first concussion you could die if you get hit again.
As has been discussed previously, the role of concussive injuries in sport is currently controversial and subject to much discussion. It is notable that there are specific sports related attitudes to concussion as well as more general mechanistic approaches. The following section will seek to address these points in more detail utilising published literature. Concussions are one of the most debated and controversial topics within the National Football League (NFL) today. During the time of Madonna doing her thing and the Reagan Administration in control medical professionals began to notice the dangers of concussions and the long-term effects of CTE. That has been a long standing problem within the NFL but has remained unaddressed until recently. Now days the conflict grabbed the attention of the media, the players, the fans, among others. Early in the league's history, players and coaches were not aware of the potential dangers and the possible long-term effects concussions could have on the players' brains.
Over 2 million children suffer concussions in sports every year. Many of these concussions go untreated and without proper treatment, these concussions can lead to serious health problems. Concussions are important because if they aren’t identified and treated it can lead to complications in an athlete’s life down the road, things like CTE can affect their mood and decisions later in life, possibly leading them to make choices they wouldn’t normally make like blowing their money, doing drugs, alcoholism and even committing suicide. People should be doing more to prevent and treat concussions in sports, specifically in football. Concussion are a major problems in most American sports. Many people know about concussions and what they are. The problem is how as a country do we stop people from getting concussion. Many people are rushed to the emergency room every year for concussion. Should parents be most concerned about football injuries that could affect their children’s ability to learn new skills or participate in class? Will those injuries put their children at a disadvantage that outweighs the advantages of playing sports? The research is based off of these questions. The injury that I am deeply interested in is dealing with the youth and how a concussions affects them personally and in schooling.
