Andi Wallick Personal Statement Indiana University School of Medicine Degree Objective: M.S. Pathologists’ Assistant My interest in pathology dates back to high school. I enjoyed most sciences but especially sciences about the body. I knew then that I wanted to work in the field of pathology.
Moving from a small sleepy mountain town in Northern Arizona to the bustling monstrous city of Las Vegas, Nevada fulfilled many of my goals in just a four hour drive. I am eighteen years old, it seems hardly reasonable to have an eighteen year old that has a hard time making the minuscule decision of what to have for dinner- make the decision of what to do for the rest of their life. I know the world is full of opportunities and I plan on taking advantage of as many as possible. Taking this class is an opportunity in itself. During my time in HMD 101 I hope to network with industry executives, deepen my passion for the hospitality and culinary industry, create positive relationships with my peers who are soon to be my colleagues, soak up every ounce of knowledge my professor and teaching assistants
Every Resident Advisor (RA) answers the on-call phone with a bit of apprehension, but when the caller tells you that they are concerned that their friend may hurt herself physically, all your nerves stand on edge. It was this experience and others like it that reaffirmed my decision to pursue a career in the Healthcare field with a specific interest in mental health. My life’s journey began on a small multiracial island where we believed and practiced “every creed and race find an equal place,” these words taken from our country’s national anthem. In our multicultural society, religion played a large role in influencing the societal norms and practices which were of a conservative nature.
Being a leader in HBSA is a great privilege and it will be a great honor to become one in future semesters. I am so passionate and will love to find an objective more important than myself and engage with other people in a reciprocal manner trusting that all I have is what I give. I am one year away from graduation and I will love that people remember me as a person who have the perfect amount of respect for other people, the right amount of strength to handle what you need to, the right amount of drive and determination and more importantly, I want to be a leader that cares about people and what they want and someone who is not selfish but generous. A career as a Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner is a natural extension of my personal, educational, and research experiences. Although my path to nursing has not been a straight line, every experience that put me on this path has shaped my passion and dedication to psychiatric nursing. After losing loved ones to suicide at a young age, I made a promise to myself and to them that I would dedicate my life to helping individuals struggling with mental illness. This promise led me to study Psychology at UC Berkeley, where I fell in love with clinical research investigating the efficacy of treatments for mental illness.
Since obtaining my master’s degree I often ask myself what will be my next career path. Will I continue to further my education or focus on other aspects of my life? As I continue to grow in my professional career, I have obtain valuable skills and knowledge to succeed in the public health field. However, the drive to immerse myself in higher education and receive more leadership opportunities are goals that I have not met. Therefore, I would like to continue my education in the same field, by applying for The Doctor of Public Health (Dr. P.H) in Health and Policy Leadership program, at Loma Linda University School of Public Health.
I want to be a physician because I want people to grow old. At the age of 6, one of my closest friends was diagnosed with leukemia. By age 8, the disease claimed his life, robbing him of the opportunity to experience the privilege of growing old. Unfortunately, we live in a society of vanity. We see the process of aging and choose not to embrace it.
For the past 18 years I wanted to do something practical and respected. Belonging to the model minority emphasized that belief even more. Due to those factors, I wanted to be an otolaryngologist specializing in laryngology. I thought this way I could get somewhat close to my passion of singing while raking in the prestige and cash. So then I decided to apply to schools with strong pre-med programs, but I also kept in mind my love for music, resulting in me applying to numerous liberal arts colleges.
Whether it was from going on mission trips and working alongside my peers to help rebuild a community or performing and competing as a dancer, being a part of a team is something that I have always been very comfortable with. In 7th grade I found a new team that I would since aspire to be a part of. I became utterly fascinated with the medical field and all it had to offer because as a young teen I spent a lot of time as a patient in and out of the hospital and saw many providers from different specialties. I loved seeing the way in which different members of a healthcare team worked together for my benefit. While being the patient may have initiated my infatuation with the field, I knew that one day I had to be on the other side.
Healthcare has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. My mother has been a Certified Nursing Assistant for over twenty years. My passion for healthcare comes from watching her care for others family members over the years. Although I did not know what career I wanted to pursue, I knew early growing up that I was destined to work in healthcare. I became fascinated with helping others early in life.
Having worked as a Medical Technologist in highly technologically advanced Clinical Chemistry department at Detroit Medical Center, made me realize that Information Technology was where I wanted to focus my career. After graduating from Oakland University in 2010 with a Bachelor's in Health Science, I joined DMC lab as a technologist because I wanted to learn about medical instruments and their technology. As a Medical Technologist, I process blood, urine and other body fluids on advanced chemistry and toxicology analyzer to aid physican in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases. I operate automated and computerized instruments capable of performing a larger number of test efficiently and accurately. These instruments can automate complex decision making process for technologist and provides necessary information in real time to improve the decision making.
I have chosen public health as my major because it is a dynamic field. I have a passion for making a difference in people’s lives and helping others achieve their goals. It is with great passion that I am dedicated and willing to contribute my service or skills to help someone in need. My philosophy of health education is very simple, to prevent, improve and educate the lives of individuals, families, communities, populations, and societies. Besides, there is no safer way to touch people’s lives than through public health.
Being in the healthcare profession as a healthcare administrator is a very demand job. As a healthcare administrator one of the major focuses would be communicating affectively no matter who your communicating with such as patients, family members, staff and outside organizations. Healthcare administrator are the abdicator for their staff, patience and facility. Today we live in a very diverse world it is important for healthcare administrator to be familiar with the demographic surrounding their facility. No matter what level of degree you are in most healthcare administrator is able to have strong professional back grounds and having the experience is necessary (Public Health,2016).
Ever since I can remember I have always wanted to make a difference and help anyone in need that I possibly could. From the start of my childhood, I can recall helping my mother care for my great grandparents, so they would be able to live out the rest of their lives from their home, instead of in a nursing home. As a young child it was extremely difficult to live with and watch my loved ones deteriorate as they got older, as their condition got worse and worse, and saw my mother having a difficult time keeping up with caring for both of my great grandparents 24/7, it put a lot of stress on the family.
