Philosophy is the careful study of the states of, validity, existence, and conduct. It comes from the Greek word, philosophia, which translates into “the love of wisdom”. Philosophy surrounds itself with a vast range of topics and every person, place, thing, and idea has its roots embedded in it. For the purpose of this paper, I will be covering all five of the branches which are: metaphysics, epistemology, politics, esthetics, and ethics. These branches serve as the building blocks to understand the different perspectives of healthcare to better understand how they can relate to one another. While examining these building blocks, I will talk about why I think philosophy should be studied. I will use healthcare as an example to why philosophy should be studied. Healthcare is considered one of our backbones of our society and is integrated into our everyday life. Ethics is a requirement for human life (Carter Langley). It is our means of deciding a course of action (Carter Langley). Without it, our actions would be random and aimless. A proper foundation of ethics requires a standard of value to which all goals and actions can be compared to, which is why I believe that philosophy should be studied. Female circumcision is something that is not ethically acceptable in our society. However, in many other societies it is an ethically acceptable norm. With studying philosophy this semester I found out quickly that what is right to one person or society can be considered wrong to another. Ethics allows the differing cultures to have their own standards. I personally will never be able to understand the rationality behind female circumcision and that is because I have my set of own
