In the novella, Heart of Darkness, Joseph Conrad epitomizes the archetypal image of light versus dark in an attempt to depict the shadow or so-called persona of the protagonist, Marlow. Throughout the entirety of the novella, the theme of imperialism has a prominent effect on several of the characters, such as Marlow and Kurtz. Light is symbolized by civilization and societal values, while the darkness is symbolized by the wilderness and the absolute truth.
