Imperialism is the process in which a country extends their power over another. In the 19th century, industrialization occurred, causing specific countries to exploit other countries for their natural resources in order to maximize their profits. Because of this, continents such as Asia and Africa became imperialized. During the 20th century, multiple wars broke out, in which the imperial countries demanded service from the imperialized countries. This played a large factor in the imperialized countries wanting to become self determined. One of the wars that occurred that challenged imperial control was the Cold War, in which the US and USSR fought due to conflicting ideologies of communism. During the 20th century, leaders in developing nations used strategies such as banding together with other developing countries (Documents 9, 15), reforming within a country (Documents 10, 14), and using violence (Documents 5, 7) to challenge imperialism.
Leaders in Ghana, India, and Indonesia utilized political committees and conferences to band together with other developing countries (Documents 9, 15). One example of these political committees was the Bandung Conference, held in 1955. During this time period, the Cold War was occuring between the United States and the Soviet Union. This conference was organized by both President Sukarno of Indonesia, and Jawaharlal Nehru, India’s first prime Minister. President Nasser spoke to the people of Egypt in 1956, in a speech titled “Proposal for a Canal Users Association”. In this speech, Nasser is able to influence reform within Egypt, as he specifically asks Egyptian people to remind themselves of liberty , justice, and independence, in order to keep the Suez Canal under Egyptian control.
