“I was born with the devil in me. I could not help the fact that I was a murderer, no more than a poet can help the inspiration to sing.” The infamous H.H. Holmes spoke these spine chilling words. Known as “America’s First Serial Killer”, Holmes lived a secretive and lavish lifestyle. Holmes’s fear of doctors as a young child ripened into a fascination of the human anatomy. That fascination became an obsession to overpower and control his victims. The 19th century, when Holmes’s terror spree rained down on Chicago, has many differences to today’s society. The first public exhibition of moving images was the Projecting Praxinoscope. This invention showed images, on a loop, through a series of mirrors. The next revolutionary invention was Kinetograph Camera and the Kinetoscope viewing box. With a series of thinly sliced film, the images were pulled through the camera and viewing box, creating a black and white short film. The creation of the Kinetograph influenced the entire history of cinema. Since Holmes was a wealthy man he enjoyed the mini films that were played after his hefty meals. If Holmes were to look at the technology behind the movie screen today he would be astonished. Not only would he be overwhelmed with the special effects, but the fact that picture films are in color now would fascinate him. There are many movies that Holmes would appreciate today. He would be amazed by the craftsmanship, of the architecture, in The Labyrinth. The stairs and corridors that lead to nowhere are just his style, considering that his own mansion was built that way. Of course Holmes would greatly appreciate the horror movies of the 21st century, including: The Saw Series, Silence of the Lambs, and Chainsaw Massacre. The Saw Series would be his favorite because of the creative and gruesome bloodshed that occurs in the movie. Holmes would find the modern day serial killer to be quite similar to his wicked
