Leaving last week’s class, my mind was darting in all sorts of directions. While the “Eyes on the Prize” excerpt gave me a concrete understanding of the historic events of the desegregation of Little Rock High School, “Little Rock Central High: 50 Years Later” brought up all sorts of observations and questions on race in America that I hadn’t necessarily thought to address before. I think these two films were particularly interesting to view back to back because of their difference in style, content, and execution. I have viewed many of the “Eyes on The Prize” segments in past classes and this segment, “Fighting Back”, continues to stand out to me. Through the use of first person interviews and real footage, the piece gave me, what felt like, a clear look
School is shortened in this society. School didn’t fill kids up with nothing but facts like they did to Mildred. In the novel Fahrenheit 451, Captain Beatty says “ We fill them up with so many facts they feel stuffed but are brilliant with information.” Captain Beatty also says, “ We start giving them manuals to read at a young age.”
School Comparison Some people might think all schools are the same. However, schools can be very different from each other. Some differences can be observed on the surface, while other require more experience and knowledge to be observed. While Williams Intermediate School and West High School are both fine schools for different reasons, West High School has certain qualities that make it a more superior school, such as a higher quality music department, academic structure, and and social aspect when compared to Williams intermediate School.
In this society, there are no books at home, and they will not have access to books so there’s no reinforcing the student knowledge. Captain Beatty explained how education undoes what school teaches. “The home environment can undo a lot you try to do at school” (Bradbury 75). This matters because schools try to teach the kids, but their home environment is full of screens and watching is a passive activity in which they aren’t learning. Overall, this society has ruined the education system because of the lack of education in homes and schools.
In today’s schools we have at least 5 hours of academics, but in Bradbury’s world, the students get a shorter time to learn unimportant material. “‘An hour of TV class, an hour of basketball or baseball or running, another hour of transcription history or painting pictures, and more sports, but do you know, we never ask questions... they just run the answers at you’” (Bradbury 27). Instead of being taught mathematics, English, science or social sciences, they learn about technology and sports, which won’t help them succeed in the future.
Back then, it was big boring, and all the kids were meg nul, because they didn’t learn anything useful. It was all like, da da da da, this happened in fourteen ninety-two, da da da da, when you mix like, chalk and water, it makes nitroglycerin, and that kind of s***? And nothing was useful? Now that School™ is run by then corporations, it’s pretty brag, because it teaches us how the world an be used, like mainly how to use our feeds…the big corps are made up of real human beings…they care about America's future... now we do stuff in classes about how to work technology and how to find bargains and what’s the best way to get a job and how to decorate
Furthermore, School would be different in the way that students would only learn what would be useful. Math in high school would include math that is helpful for life. A life skills class would also be something required in high school. Students would be taught about credit, mortgage, taking out loans, the truth behind applying to college and financial aid, as well as other useful things that are not usually discussed in high school. Students would be taught about facets of self-love, including caring for your body mentally and physically.
By having gone to only middle-class public schools, I partly agree with Anyon’s findings; it is mostly about getting the right answer and following clearly stated directions. I say this because although the earlier stages of my schooling were entirely dedicated to getting the right answers and following laid out directions, the latter stages were different. Getting the right answer was still important, yes, but the wrong answer was valued if you could explain how it was reached. Also, directions became vague, which called for creativity. The early and late stages of schooling I underwent were very different from each other in terms of creativity and correctness in answers.
Kids from KIPP are very smart and responsible young adults, but how do these kids do it at such a young age? KIPP is a better school than Anaheim schools because the students who go to KIPP have a higher percentage of graduating unlike the students at Anaheim schools. For example “ Just over ten years into existence, KIPP has became one of the most desirable public schools in New York”, because the KIPP students take their work seriously and tend not to socialize with others who slack off. Another reason why KIPP students are doing so well is, study shows that the students at KIPP are spending fifty to sixty percent more time learning than the the traditional kid at public schools. That is another reason why kids at KIPP are so successful because
Most high school students are subject to an everyday routine consisting of having classes all day, having to talk to teachers and go to extracurricular activities just to go home to study and sleep. If you have ever watched high school musical growing up you may have thought about what high school was really going to be like when you get there. Kids wonder if it will be similar to the movie or if it will be completely different than they thought. High school and high school musical have their similarities originating from everyday life when in reality they differ in the reality of students, teachers, classes, sports and musicals. High school students are everyday typical teenagers, their attention is stuck on their phone, and friends for the most part.
When I started at my first U.S. high school, I thought it was completely different from high school in Iraq. Nevertheless, I realized that there were many similarities between U.S. public high schools and Iraqi public high schools. One thing in common is that many students in both countries are going to discover themselves through the journey of high school, and decide what they want to be. The other similarity is that in U.S public high schools, if students get high scores on the ACT or SAT, they would receive scholarships that help them pay the tuition for a university or a college. Likewise, in Iraq, if they get excellent scores on a test in senior year of high school, they would attend the university or the college for free.
Do you know that Cleveland heights have two separate schools for the high school? Its divided into the main heights building and another building the options program. Their are many similarities between the two and many differences. . Both schools require good attendance and for all students to be in class. Options and heights also have the same curriculum and classes that are required to be taken.
Students also can be exposed to all of the basic classes such as Math,ELA,Science, and History in elementary school and then in middle school and highschool they choose their own
Schools are the second place after home where students’ behavior and future educational success are shaped. At schools there are many elements or factors that can influence the teaching and learning process that may take place. Rasyid (2012) stated that there are four perennial truths that make the teaching and learning process possible to take place in the classroom. If one of these is not available, there will be no teaching and learning process, though the learning process itself may still take place, they are: (1) Teacher, (2) Students, (3) Material and (4) Context of time and place. All of them are related to one another.
