Dance is usually defined as a movement of body. Therefore, this movement depends of what kind of dance form you are doing. There are several different dance forms out there ranging from Hip Hop to Bhangra. One of the famous dance form in today’s generation is Hip Hop. Hip Hop dance style includes body movements such as breaking, locking, roboting, boogaloo, and popping (Wikipedia). During week 11 in Dance 131 class, there was a module on Hip Hop dance form and it was explained in detail the different movements in Hip Hop dancing. Hip hop is about 40 years old dance started in late 1970’s. It is parallel with the evolution of Hip Hop music. The purest hip hop dance style known as breaking began in the early 1970’s. People would love to try these moves at their homes, parties or at clubs. As time goes by, Breaking became a dance form which was strictly performed while standing up. This movement of your body while standing up was known as Top rock. It usually serves as the opening to a breaker’s performance before transitioning into other dance movies performed on floor (Wikipedia). An opposite of top rock was Uprock. Uprock is performed with a partner and is aggressive and involves fancy footwork, shuffling and movements that mimic fighting. As time passes by, there were other forms being introduced in Hip hop such locking and Roboting and Popping. In locking, a dancer would constantly lock his/her body while dancing. Addition to that, Popping is a dance technique of quickly contracting and relaxing muscles to cause a jerk in the dancer’s body. Hip Hop emerged as an authentic cultural expression in African American youth during 1970’s. That craze is still quite similar. In recent times, Hip Hop has become a huge platform for people to show their talent and make a living based off that. Additionally, Hip Hop has had an overwhelming influence on the African American community in America as well. Hip Hop is not just a dance or music, it has become a culture which represents several different individuals in many part of the world. It has influenced many people in small cities and bring out the hidden talents of people. In recent times, a famous example of Breakdance could be related to no other than Michael Jackson. He was famous for his break dance and there were many people who were inspired by him.
