Dear Diary,

Today I spent my evening connecting with the Holy Spirit. I had my family and friends there to support and congratulate me as I made the sacrament of confirmation. I always thought this sacrament was the least important because I didn’t fully understand the concept of confirmation. I later realised that it is a sacrament that deepens the gifts of baptism and expresses the commitment that we made as Christians.

It's most frequently associated with the gifts of the Holy Spirit. The same Spirit that fell on Jesus at his baptism again descends on the Apostles at Pentecost, according to the Gospels (CCC, nos. 1285–1287). I had just received the 7 special gifts of wisdom, understanding, knowledge, fortitude, counsel, piety and fear of the Lord, to support my mission and testimony. Although I am surrounded by the Holy Spirit every day, today was a day that I sealed the journey, through a mass with my classmates and a gathering with my loved ones.

The Holy Spirit can be viewed by Catholics in many different ways. For example, the term “spirit” means breath, air, or wind. The Holy Breath of God is one of how the Holy Spirit is present to us. According to John 20:22, it says that Jesus “breathed on them and said to them, ‘receive the Holy Spirit.”

As the breath/wind of God is seen in lots of other scriptures, I feel that it represents the idea that by sharing our gifts with others and fulfilling Jesus’ teachings as Christians, we are being driven by the Holy Spirit to continue and deepen our faith. Catholic people may decide to live out the Holy Spirit by activities such as going to mass, meditating, spending time with nature, or communicating with others nicely. These are all actions that can better ourselves, and the world around
