Homelessness in Kansas City
Homelessness is an epidemic that can affect anyone at any time. The issue of homelessness is varied and complex: “Some people experience homelessness temporarily, while others may be subject to chronic homelessness” (Homelessness). People who are homeless lack basic necessities such as food, shelter, and hygiene. The problem affects every city in every country; this includes Kansas City. Homelessness is a big issue in the Kansas City metropolitan area, and one solution is supplying permanent housing for the homeless until they can regain a place in society.
Many factors cause homelessness; individuals could have a stable income and suddenly be homeless. Many people are in unfortunate situations such as “economic inequality, high housing costs, unemployment, mental health issues, and drug addiction can lead to homelessness” (Homelessness). Cities need to aid in solving those issues to reduce homelessness. Moreover, cities need a specialized plan that fits their cities’ needs, and Kansas City is no different.

The lack of affordable housing has created 711 homeless people in Kansas City, which increased from 408 in 2021 (Mansaray). Some people simply can not afford the cost of living. Once a person loses their home, they lose their safe space. Moreover, when people do not have a support system to aid them in hard times, they are more likely to remain homeless for longer. The increase in the homeless population has resulted in more strain on Kansas City to provide resources to aid in combating the homelessness
