Unemployed and Working Hard, written by Simon Wykoff, describes the life of a homeless man. However, this essay seems to be very personal to Wykoff, for the homeless man was her father, and even her. Throughout her essay, Wykoff describes the life her father lived. She talks about the everyday struggles he had that most people take for granted. Her essay implies something else.

More people suffer from homelessness than we realize. We often take for granted having a home to go to. I completely agree with Anna about her feelings on homelessness. I often see the homeless on the side of the road and I normally refer to them as homeless people but what I fail to realize is, that “homeless person” has a name, that “homeless guy” is a human being just like the rest of us longing for certainty, stability and privacy. Those “homeless people” are human beings without a home.

Homelessness is usually a result of several of complicated issues. First, domestic and family violence is considered to be the most common reason why people become homeless. Domestic and family violence is that one person uses abuse and/or violence to control his/her spouse or other family members through fear (Domestic Violence Prevention Centre, 2016). Therefore, victims prefer to stay outside all day in order to avoid being at home which is considered as nightmare. Second, financial difficulty is another major cause for homelessness.
There are many other reasons why people become homeless and people need to take the time to understand them and the reasons why. People should not treat people different because someone else may have a mental illness or a disability. Some homeless individuals are so mentally ill that pedestrians assume this person must be on drugs. Yes, some do drugs, but most homeless individuals who use drugs started using them after they have lost their home. For most, drugs were not the leading cause of their loss of housing but can potentially give them trouble finding a spot within a homeless shelter since “Many shelters will not admit anyone who is drunk or high. Those who do not have shelter or enough income come join us here daily to eat or take a nap”(Gretchen, St. John’s Kitchen). Many of them suffer from mental illnesses, “25.6% were diagnosed with anger management problems, 19.1% with ADHD, 15.2% with hyperactivity, 4.5% with dyslexia”(Toronto Star Newspaper).
Homelessness. The state of not having a home. This is a large problem in America. 564,708 people in this nation suffer this fate and that number on the rise. According to Socialsolutions.com, 15 percent of these people have disabilities.
You yourself would never think twice when looking at someone homeless that it would happen to you. The ignorance and luvious lifestyle didn 't prepare me for my first night being homeless. Sure it will provide you all the wordly possessions you desire but what about when you don 't have this lifestyle to hold you hand? When just like the alchol, it decides to leave you.
Some people may think that homelessness is a trouble because they assume that the individual is lazy and just wants life to be handed to them. Further assumptions are made about drugs causing individuals to become homeless. While that sometimes happens, many times it is the other way around. Individuals who have become homeless feel helpless and give into the release from their reality that drugs can give them (Thompson, 2011). People that do not consider factors outside of the individual are overlooking the breakdown within many institutions including school and the family that could lead an individual to become homeless.
Homelessness is one the most ignored problems in the United States with citizen and politician. Homeless people are walked by and ignored. Nobody ever thinks that they will be homeless. Due to the economy, people live paycheck to paycheck making house payments very difficult. Most people will want to believe most homeless people are drug addicts or alcoholics, but most people will be surprise to know that it is no all true.
Disabled individuals, veterans and families are some of the demographic that is affected by homelessness. Physical ailments such as malnutrition, lack of hygiene, undiagnosed diseases and/or disorders can be detrimental. Mental disorders such as depression can develop due to the harsh circumstances of living on the streets. The lack of support, affordable housing and medical care that homeless individuals are receiving are prime examples of the need for compassionate and dedicated social workers to assist homeless individuals in regaining hope, purpose, and to evoke the strength within themselves. Living in shelters or public areas, homeless individuals are extremely resilience.
