The short story, “Rikki-Tikki-Tavi”, by Rudyard Kipling, expresses the theme of overcoming fear to protect your family. Both Rikki-Tikki-Tavi and Nagaina show determination to protect their family at all costs, including the need to fight to the death. First, Rikki is resembled a human hero, portraying human-like characteristics such as bravery, intelligence, and love for his family. “As he held, he closed his jaws tighter and tighter, for he made sure he would be banged to death, and for the honor of his family, he preferred to be found with his teeth locked, “ (KIPLING 20). For example, Rikki asks Darzee, “Where is Nagaina, for the third time,” and he replies, “On the rubbish heap by the stables, mourning for Nag,” (KIPLING 22). This shows that Nagaina was really miserable over Nag’s death. Additionally, the author states that Nag was blown to bits, which makes his soulless body look more horrifying. Also, Nagaina expresses rage at one time during the time Darzee’s wife takes part of one of Rikki’s plan. “Well! It may be some consolation to you when you’re dead to know that I shall settle accounts with the boy. My husband lies on the rubbish heap this morning, but before night the boy in the house will lie very still. What is the use of running away? I am sure to catch you. Little fool, look at me!” (KIPLING 24). This huge quote form Nagaina shows that she is extremely angered about how Rikki killed Nag. Darzee’s wife saved Rikki from getting killed by Nagaina, so Nagaina feels that she shall be punished for that.
