In the memoir Night written by Elie Wiesel, Eli, a teenager had been taken away from his home and taken to the Auschwitz concentration camp. Night is the scary record of Elie Wiesel’s memories of the death of his own family and the death of his own innocence as he tries to fight his way out of the concentration camp. Over the course of the book, Eli changes from a believer in God living in bearable conditions to someone who has become profane because of the situation he’s been put in.
Through thorough examination of Eliezer Wiesel’s autobiographical novel Night, it is clear that he finds hope to possess the power to permit the survival of individuals, but whose presence can pose a great danger to a people’s survival. In the holocaust stories many things happened to Jews, and these things that were tampered with that affected the Jews horribly. One of those things is the jew's hope is tested over and over again which sometimes makes or breaks the hope. At the beginning of Night, Elie was someone who believed fervently in his religion. His experiences at Auschwitz and other camps, such as Birkenau and Buna have affected his faith immensely. Elie started to lose his faith when he and his father arrived at Birkenau. They saw the enormous flames rising from a ditch, with people being thrown in.
In Night, Wiesel references the event in Aden when a Parisian lady gazes upon a brawling fight between boys over a coin she threw at them. Similar to the working men throwing bread into the cattle car of prisoners, this event exposes the true purpose for giving the prisoners food, highlights an undesirable trait of humanity, and reminds readers of the desperate relationships between prisoners trapped in the cattle car. First, it highlights the desperate nature of the prisoners. While the starving prisoners want the food desperately, the amount is insufficient to feed them, causing conflict to erupt. Like the desperate boys in Aden, the men turn upon each other frantically.
Elie Wiesel is not only a talented author but a survivor of the holocaust who documented his horrific experiences in his memoir “Night”. In the book “Night” it represents a strong connection between a father and his son. It shows that when something traumatizing happens, people do change. No matter what happens faith and hope are all you can hang onto. You have to keep faith and hope at the lowest point because that will most likely always be what gets you past the hardships that you face. Americans today tend to believe that the littlest things are the end of the world.
But then he experiences the hardships of the Holocaust and it abruptly changed him. In the book Night, the main theme is religious belief, shown when Elie talks about the his strong religion and belief as a boy, his disconnection from religion, and the inhumane actions the Nazis caused. Having a strong belief in something so important to who we are and then being confronted with horrors which cause us to cease to believe, is a significant life changing event. During this time, many people questioned where God truly was. Even Elie was questioning where God was.
