“Hopes and dreams help people survive, even if they can never become real.” A plethora amount of people have hopes and dreams that help them going even if they know that it may never become a reality. They have hopes and dreams that lead them on. It’s like they’re connected by a thread to their dream but they know that one day that thread is going to be cut and that their dream may never come true. Similarly, in the novel Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck George and Lennie had a dream of owning their own farm where they would raise animals and be in control. Something so small, yet he still hoped for it. He hoped and dreamed to one day be able to tend the rabbits. He wanted to have his own rabbits and be able to raise them and take care of them on his own. “She struggled violently under his hands. Her feet battered on the hay and she writhed to be free; and from under Lennie’s hand came a muffled screaming. Lennie began to cry with fright. ‘Oh! Please don’t do none of that,’ he begged. ‘George gonna say I done a bad thing. He ain’t gonna let me tend no rabbits,’” (Steinbeck, page 88). This statement shows how much Lennie wants to tend his own rabbits and knows that if George finds out that he did something as bad as killing Curley’s wife he would never be able to fulfill his dream. Although George and Lennie are just friends and George doesn’t really have the right to tell him what to do, George is like a personal caretaker to Lennie. He always wants Lennie to be out of harm and always thinks the best for him. Lennie is not the smartest of people and knows that if he were alone he would probably get eaten by coyotes because he wouldn’t be able to make very wise decisions himself. These dreams and hopes were what were leading them on. They went from ranch to ranch finding jobs just so one day they would be able to have their own.
