Mass murderers and serial killers are nothing new to today’s society. We learn about them in TV shows, books, research papers, in our classes, etc. Psychologists have spent decades trying to uncover the truth behind these killers’ madness. Serial killers vary in their behaviors, techniques, desires, mental illnesses and their personal lives. Have you ever heard of the Tamiami Trail Killer?
The researcher also considered any social, environmental, psychological, and/or biological factors that may have contributed to the convicted murderer’s behavior. The assignment unravels as follows.
Risk assessments are used to help determine recidivism rates among offenders. Sex offenders have quite a few assessments from VRAG, SORAG, SVR-20, SIR, and Static-99. Out of the assessments SORAG and Static-99 are used the most for sex offenders. Sex offenders also tend to be rapist, child molester and violent killers. A sex offender that fits these categories is a guy by the name Jeffrey Dahmer.
The Evolution of the Articles of Confederation to the Constitution The Articles of Confederation went into effect on March 1, 1781 and were later replaced by the Constitution on June 21, 1788. The Articles of Confederation was created in order to unite the New World states in the fight for independence from Britain. Fearing the oppression of the strong centralized British government, the Articles of Confederation was created to protect the people of the emerging United States and did not allow for a powerful central government. At the end of the American Revolution, the Articles desperately required amendment or replacement in order to promote an effective government. The major evolutionary step of the Articles of Confederation to the Constitution took place through the Great Compromise and the Three-Fifths Compromise at the Constitutional Convention in May 1787.
Serial killers have been a popular topic in Hollywood. There are many documentaries and dramatizations created about serial killers. The public interest in the topic stems from trying to understand what causes these people to commit such acts; serial killers have impacted the police force in so many different ways. Theorists have studied to see whether serial killers are created through childhood drama and environmental influences or determined by intellectual differences. Ted Bundy was one of the infamous serial killers for his actions.
However, a serial killer suffering from psychopathy cannot control his or her impulses, identify with others and feel empathy, and cannot conform his or her behavior to social norms. Thus, proving he or she cannot possibly be completely competent and responsible for their actions, no matter how heinous” (Gay). However, there is a difference between someone diagnosed with psychopathy and someone with anti-social personality disorder. “Unlike serial killers with psychopathy, those with anti-social personality disorder should not be allowed to plead guilty by reason of insanity. They lack empathy but otherwise understand what they are doing.
Not all serial killers are bad people. Studies have shown that cases that some serial killers are just mentally unstable. Instead of putting most serial killers locked away behind bars, they should be sent to a mental institution. It has been shown that some people who has been convicted of being a serial killers has been put into a mental institution and the mind of that person was rehabilitated and better. Instead of just locking them away in a cell, they should get the help they need.
Many serial killers have psychopathic tendencies, which mean they have normal roles in society. If they are sociopaths, they are more likely to be
This abnormality mainly affects men, but can occur in women too. When people have this abnormality, they never seem to have an attachment to the world, which is why they aren’t sympathetic towards their victims. Another similarity in serial killers is maltreatment or abuse during their childhood. In a study that included 50 killers, it was found that 70 percent were mistreated during their youth and 50 percent went through psychological abuse
Bellow shows the raw data collected on the fieldwork day, testing all five attributed of walkability This data shows a range of walkability along the train line. The trend of this data is that as a whole the walkability along the Fremantle train line is relatively high, with anomalies in North Fremantle, Victoria Street and Cottesloe. To more efficiently analyse this data, it then converted into a bar graph to show the walkability of each station on the Fremantle line.
With evaluating both Mental Disorders and Antisocial Personality Disorders along with the brain functions that are responsible for these disorders, it helps to clarify the understanding of why serial killers act the way that they do. Seeing the abnormalities which are present in serial killers, it seems most appropriate to place them in mental institutions, but many other factors play a role in the lengthy decision that must be made on their placement. The topic of whether serial killers should be placed in mental institutions versus prisons needs to be inspected on several levels due to the many factors that are significant in the process of deciding. Viewing this through a scientific perspective the best option appears to be mental institutions but when taking in account all the other factors that potentially play a role in this decision making process prisons seem most feasible financially and considering the fact that these diseases are usually not reversible therefore sending them back into society after a mental institution would prove not
At the same time I believe some are just lying about feeling bad because they just want people to see they changed and to be released from prison. Most serial killers are manipulative so they would be able to use that to their advantage to make people believe that they have changed for the better. From some articles that I have read it explains how most killers that are released because of their so called change of heart go back to killing again after. It is possible for people to change and become a better person but a majority of killers are evil for the rest of their lives. Its not that people can’t change but it will be harder for society to accept them as a different person from evil to good
And we should not rule out a sentence of life without parole in extreme cases. We must balance the victims’ families’ right to some legal inality with the likelihood that the offender will ever qualify for release. It’s a sad fact that some sociopaths start young and remain dangerous all their lives.” (Bishop Hankins) (Source A).
As if we needed any other reason to keep these serial killers in a prison, serial killers tend to have no regard for the rights of others. Above all, our society today, even though it has major ups and downs, has a common level of respect for others. Our society acknowledges our basic human rights. When it comes to serial killers, they do not have any regard to other people’s rights, hence why they are imprisoned. For example, when serial killers select their victims, they often times dehumanize them.
Murder, willingly taking another human's life, is considered a heinous crime in the United States, and from the sociological perspective, breaks an important more. Serial Murder, therefore, is a sociologically deviant phenomenon where a person kills two or more people in distinct events, and an FBI overview of serial killers states “No single cause, trait, or even a group of traits can differentiate or identify serial killers … from other types of violent offenders” (FBI). However, use of the sociological perspective to identify potential factors in these cases is possible. As a boy, Jeffrey Dahmer was described as being a loner and a poor student- and had been sexually abused by a neighbor. He is homosexual, which carried a negative stigma during most of his lifetime: he was described as appearing to be a gentle, suave man in homosexual circles.
