Abraham Lincoln was a great president of the United States who accomplished many things in his life and lead America through the Civil War. Abraham Lincoln is the 16th president of the United States from March 4, 1861 to April 15, 1865. Abraham Lincoln was born on February 12, 1809 in a small log house in Kentucky. Throughout his childhood, he learned how to work hard, working on a farm and learned to love books. Lincoln attended school sporadically, and was mostly self- taught. He enjoyed to learn, read, and write and continued to have this passion all throughout his life. November 4, 1842 was when he married his wife, Mary Todd. After serving his term in Congress, he decided to run for president. He got elected and his inauguration was on March 4, 1861. During his presidency, the Civil War was going on and Lincoln was the commander in chief of the Union Army. He also opposed slavery and on September 22, 1862 he made a proclamation stating freedom for slaves in the US. He also made the Emancipation Proclamation on January 1, 1863 which preserved the nation after the struggle of war and gave freedom to all Americans. Last, on November 19, 1863 Abraham Lincoln gave the Gettysburg Address speech about the nation after the war. To celebrate the end of the Civil War, Lincoln and his wife went to Ford’s Theatre in Washington D.C. to watch a play, on April 14, 1865. John Wilkes Booth, Lincoln’s assassin, managed to sneak up to the private box where Lincoln was sitting and shot him in the back of the head. John Wilkes Booth was born May 10, 1838 and was 9 of 10 children. He lived on a farm near Bel Air in Maryland. His father was Junis Booth, a famous actor, which is how John got into acting.
