Generals on both sides of the Civil War used different military strategies and tactics commanded their troops. Generals Ulyssess S. Grant and William T. Sherman both had different strategies and tactics and their strategies and tactics differed from traditional military practices. Ulyssess S. Grant wanted to use two main military strategies to win the war. First, he wanted to combine military efforts. The south received mostly all manufactured goods straight from the north and Europe and since the south produces mostly cotton, they must acquire all manufactured goods from out of state. Congress passed the Tariff of 1828 and 1832 which made South Carolina and the south very mad. South Carolina and the south believed they were getting cheated, so South Carolina threatened to secede unless the tariff was lowered.
The first main cause of the Civil War was economic differences between the Northern and Southern states. During the first few decades of the 19th century, the North had an industrial revolution that brought an economy that relied on laborers. While at the same time, the South continued to rely on slaves for their farming and the production of cotton. The Northerners did not need slaves for their economy, but the Southerners could not make any profit without cotton or slaves. In the 1860’s, the North had twice as many railroads as the South, and the South had a bigger cotton production because of their slave population (Document A).
The U.S. had been moving toward civil conflict for a while. There was lots of differences between the geographical differences between the states caused tension. In the south, they used a lot of slaves as laborers. Some people could have up to 300 slaves working in fields.
They also passed the Second Reconstruction Act and the 15th amendment which was aimed at freedom of voting. The South did everything in their power to limit rights of former slaves and ended up passing laws called the Black Codes. During this time, former slaves were trying to readjust to their new lives but most ended falling back into the cycle with sharecroppers. The turning point of Reconstruction happened with the Depression of 1873. The Resumption Act of 1875 caused many northerners to vote for Democrats.
In 1858, President Lincoln wanted to end slavery, he wanted America to become one thing, or the other. Unfortunately, Southerns didn't agreed to Lincoln's decision, which is why Southern States seceded from the Union and later on caused the Civil War. The Civil War lasted from 1861 to 1865, causing many damages to both the North and South. However, Southern States were severely crippled after war, and southerners daily lives came to a half since the war caused the destruction of their homes and towns. All of this was very difficult for the South to recover since their economy was based on agriculture.

By this time, the tensions between the North and South were very high and war was close to breaking out. The election of Lincoln is when the turning point of war was nearing, as the South didn’t want him to take their slaves away. Another major factor that led to the Civil war was the social status and views at the time. The North and South had very different social views. In the North, while a good amount of the people owned slaves, many of them began to see it as wrong and inhumane. They also began to believe that they no longer needed slaves to do work for them and that the slaves should have freedom, as well as their own rights. But even with the North beginning to want to change things, slaves were still not treated like human beings most of the time.
