How Did Architecture Influence The Development Of Roman Civilization

The Romans are the most well known and powerful ancient civilization in the world. The Romans inspired many of today’s most well known structures. The Romans founded the idea of stadiums and athletic events. Though due to time and loss of funds Rome has fallen, and is no longer so powerful as it once was and many of the great buildings lay in rubble. One thing that the architecture did to improve the Romans life, was make Rome beautiful and different than any other past civilizations. Another thing Architecture influenced in the development of Rome was that Architecture gave the citizens of Rome homes and water. For example, as Vitruvius once said, “ALL BUILDINGS MUST BE EXECUTED IN SUCH A WAY AS TO TAKE ACCOUNT OF DURABILITY, UTILITY & BEAUTY.” shows us that a Rome was a city of beauty and all work was done thoroughly. Before Rome, buildings were built for use, not beauty so when other ancient civilizations built bathhouses, there would not be any decorations. Until the Romans, the Romans put large arches, marble, domes, and height to the bathhouses to give them lavish interiors. That did this while also considering how long would it last and if it had any use. This is why these Roman structures still exist today and why Rome was the most advanced civilization of its time. The Romans also built the world’s first roads which were used for pedestrian traffic, and army vehicles. The Romans had to design and cleverly construct their long lasting roads which branched out from their large empire. Through doing this, many people were impressed and wanted to move to this modern capital and become citizens. Like the famous phrase says all roads lead to Rome, well at that time, all roads really did lead to Rome, they were the only civilization to have roads!(Not including the Silk Road which had more of a temporary dirt road than a stone road.) The colosseum was the entertainment of Rome, the biggest empire of its time. The Amphitheatre was in the shape of an oval and had two main entrances, not to get confused with the decorative arches. The colosseum was built with a new concrete method in which many Roman buildings were built with. Inside the Amphitheatre, 50,000 men could sit down on marble seats which have since been stolen. Thanks to the architecture of the theatre, Romans were given free entertainment run by the government.
