Buddhism started and originated in northern India in the early 5th century. It was started by a man named Siddhartha Gautama. In the 3rd century B.C.E., several ambitious leaders built the Mauryan empire and fought many bloody battles. One king, named Ashoka, was troubled with all that was going on he converted to Buddhism. He made a code of nonviolence, he renounced all warfare and incorporated principles of Buddhism in his ruling practices. Ashoka promoted Buddhist expansion by sending monks to surrounding territories to share the teachings of the Buddha. The religion started to spread, and not only through India, but also internationally. Buddha discovered Three Universal Truths and Four Noble Truths, which he then taught to the people
