Number one, if Christopher didn’t discover America, the french explorers would never have been interested in going to these lands, and number two, Cartier was born just one year after Columbus discovered America. So you can imagine that Cartier, and a lot of other explorers, grew up around the stories of Columbus. This probably sparked imagination and a lot of admiration and inspiration to be just like him, just like Christopher wanted to be like Marco Polo when he was a boy. They changed North America by the Columbian trade, and changed the Indians by trade,
Christopher Columbus was an Italian explorer, navigator, and colonizer who is well known for “discovering” North America. In reality Christopher was trying to get to China and thought he was in Japan all 4 times he went to North America. He was actually in what is now the Bahamas and Cuba. And really Christopher didn't even discover America. The Native Americans beat Columbus by thousands of years.
As a result of this, Christopher Columbus did not use a map, he didn’t follow the same route as the Portuguese explorers, and he persuaded his crew to trust him. However, Columbus did have a compass to help him and it navigated him to the New World. It can be proven that Columbus had more than just the average skills of a European. To conclude with, he corrected the Portuguese about their view of the Earth and its shape and this is why he chose his own route to explore. ("Christopher Columbus's Challenges He Encountered." )
Christopher Columbus as we know is the historical person credited for the discovery of the New World. Zheng He was a Hui-Chinese mariner, explorer, diplomat and fleet admiral, who commanded voyages to Southeast Asia, South Asia, the Middle East, and East Africa. Each men and their fleets had two completely different reason for their travel. Christopher Columbus purpose was to find a new trade way to the Asian countries. Zheng He's purpose was to enlarge empires control of seaway trade.
Columbus died not knowing he later found America after he discovered the Caribbean. Magellan later made a route around the world all the way to Africa with the help of a map (dock D). The priests of the churches became mad because they claimed that God made the World flat but was wrong, as well as thinking that the heavens were above the clouds. They were later wrong. The Explorers are still known for “exploring” and “finding” America and the caribbeans.
Columbus continued with, “they should be good servants.” Columbus forced them to become christians and used violence against them if they refused to do so. It is said by many that Columbus was the first to believe that the world was round, but that is also untrue. People already knew that the world was round. He just set out to sail around it.
When I was younger I was under the impression that Christopher Columbus was a great man and that he discovered America. We celebrate Columbus day because we honor him for “discovering America”. From this new information that I have learned today, Christopher Columbus is not the man iv have been taught about.
Christopher Columbus sailed the ocean blue in fourteen hundred ninety-two. When one hears the name Christopher Columbus, they tend to think about his discovery of America. What they don’t consider is how his discovery changed and affected America. First of all, Columbus’ discovery provided the start of a long term colonization, which created what we know today as America. People, who immigrated from another country, traveled all over the world to make it to America in hopes of getting land in “The New World”.
Christopher Columbus is a man who is commonly depicted as a hero and great explorer who discovered our modern day America, but many of the so called “facts” are not all completely true as people would like to believe. Columbus was undoubtedly a courageous explorer who brought many new ideas, cultures, and resources to be exchanged between the New World and Europe. While this is true, it is not uncommon for people to forget the harmful effects brought along with the voyages made by Columbus and the darker details of his times in America. Columbus started from humble middle class family. Columbus was born in 1451 in the Republic of Genoa as the oldest of his four siblings.
Christopher Columbus was an explorer and navigator born in 1451 in Genoa, Italy. When Christopher Columbus crossed the Atlantic Ocean from Spain in 1492, he hoped to reach eastern Asia. He thought he had reached Asia when he landed on an island in the Caribbean Sea. In fact he had opened up to Europeans a new world with two continents—North America and South America—and many islands.
During his journey he found an air passage that will help transport goods to the new world, he also found that the trip west took longer than anticipated and Columbus lied on the distance they traveled so the crew does not worry ( eyewitnesstohistory.com). Once Columbus crew found out that he had lied to them he promised them and if they don 't see land in the next two days they will turn back and head home (eyewitnesstohistory.com). That next day Columbus and his crew had spotted land and all of the crew members were anxious to set foot and discover what they have found (eyewitnesstohistory.com). Once they got close to land Columbus knew that he did not find Asia but instead he found the Caribbean islands (eyewitnesstohistory.com). After meeting the locals or the Tainos they encountered that they had gold, silver, pearls, and salves (history.com).
Inclusively, the professor explained that stories such as the flat earth, and the challenges Columbus faced while discovering America, only help to empower the concept of heroification. Surprisingly, Loewen explains that these and other erroneous stories are learned through history textbooks. Dr. Jendian explained that these misconceptions, keep students unaware of the real nature of history. According to Loewen (32), “The authors of history textbooks have taken us on a trip of their own, away from the facts of history, into the realm of myth.” As mentioned previously, Columbus is presented to us as a symbol of heroification, demonstrating how history textbooks contain errors about his real life.
In the article “Leif Erikson” , Leif Eriksson, who was the son of Erik the Red, is said to be the first European to set foot in North America. There are stories about how he truly discovered North America but one story says that he sailed off course on his way back to Greenland and ended up below Greenland in North america. Another story is he heard about the fertile land of North America by an icelandic man who had sailed past it years before so Leif thought it would be a good place to land his ship.
