Did you know that Eliot Ness was a nationally known police officer? He did many amazing things in his lifetime. He helped clean up the crime ridden United States during the 1920’s and 1930’s. His life contains many amazing things and accomplishments. Eliot Ness was born in Chicago, Illinois on April 19, 1903 (Biography.com). His father was Peter Ness and his mother was Emma Ness. They owned a bakery business together. They also both came to the United States together as Norwegian Immigrants (Facts, Childhood, Family). Eliot had five siblings. They were named Clara, Effie Katrine, Nora, Charles, and Ella (Geni.com). Eliot attended high school for four years and graduated at Christian Fender High School in Chicago. Eliot attended the University of Chicago, where he majored in economics. He graduated in 1925. He received his first job, shortly after graduating, at the Retail Credit Company. He was an investigator for the company. He conducted verifications and background checks on the people of Chicago. He played a major role in the Prohibition Bureau and police forces. He did many things for the Prohibition Bureau. He destroyed million dollars of illegal breweries run by Al Capone. Not only did Eliot destroy Capone’s illegal breweries, he played a large part in getting Al Capone arrested. He also decided to clean up the city of Cleveland. During this time, Cleveland was a crime ridden part of the nation, including the officers in charge there. Ness decided to change this. By the time Ness was done, the city of Cleveland was almost crime free. Ness forced over 200 officers to resign their jobs (Facts, Childhood, Family). Eliot improved the city greatly. All of this left his mark on the time
